Hi Ladies, I have found out only 4 days ago - first pregnancy - and have been to the GP on the same day. The GP only provided me with folic acid and did not give me any useful information or answers to my many questions/doubts just answering: "the midwife will take care of you".

Now, how can you make sure which week of pregnancy are you in? Just counting the weeks from the first day of your last period? If so it would be approximately 7 weeks for me ...

I am also worried that I have not been contacted by any midwife or similar yet (I have only been to the GP 4 days ago). How long does it take to be contacted.

I have seen the NHS forums but it is suggested to talk to the GP for these issues, shall I call the GP again and ask to meet/talk to a different doctor?

Thanks!!!! xxx

Hi Giuly,
I'm a first timer too!

Phoned my GP surgery this morning and was told I didn't need to see a GP, they took all my details and told me a midwife would be in touch between week 8 & 10 to book an appointment to see me before wk12!

It's all a bit of an anticlimax- have millions of questions too!

Congratulations! Are you taking folic acid yet?

I am looking forward to being contacted and having the first scan... and in addition to doubts on pregnancy and all the process that I hope will be resolved after meeting the midwife I am thinking of:

- When is the best time to tell my colleagues and employer - my contract expires in the summer, I am afraid a little bit I will not have a renewal because of the pregnancy ...
- When should I start thinking of larger clothes appropriate for pregnancy - my current clothes just put my tummy in evidence and feel uncomfortable now ...

Thank you! Congrats to you too :)
Yes have been taking Folic Acid for a couple of months now, but not every day as I kept forgetting! Making a concerted effort to remember now!

I would speak to the citizens advice bureau re your contract renewal, they will be able to tell you your legal rights :)

Hi. Congrats!

Yes, go by the date of your LMP, unless you have very long or very short, or irregular cycles then it should be pretty accurate.

You'll probably be offered a dating scan at around 12 weeks too.

Most GP surgeries have you self refer now. With my first which I conceived in 2003(!) I saw the GP to confirm the pregnancy and then was told to make an appointment with the midwife, though tbh I got the impression it wasn't necessary. The next time I got pg (2006 and 2009) I was just told to book straight in with the midwife at around 7 to 8 weeks (unfortunately in 2009 I m/c at 6 weeks so never did get the booking in appointment).

I don't know if it's changed again recently, but I don't plan to see the Dr, I will just phone up in a few weeks and tell them I need my first midwife appointment.

I tested on Saturday (can't believe it's only been 2 days, feels like ages ago!) and I am 5 weeks tomorrow going by LMP, however I know we DTD 3 days before I was due to ovulate, so I may have ovulated early last month, though I don't think it matters much as they come when they are ready LOL.

This is my 3rd, but with my eldest being 11 and a half and the youngest being 9 in 2 weeks time, I remember very little of their pregnancies, births and first year or two. It very much feels like I'm starting from scratch, only with the bonus of knowing what mistakes I made with them and a vague idea of what I'll do differently this time lol.

Just for what it's worth, you might be better looking for a supplement of Folate, rather than folic acid. There's quite a bit online about why folate is better, folic acid is the synthetic form of folate and not as well utilized by the body. :)

I'm a first timer too and im 13+2 now. I saw gp who said I had to book midwife appointment (8weeks) she sent off for my scan date and I had it yesterday. Hope this helps a bit.xx
