i know this is a really old post but i thought i'd add my updated story that i've been writing all year!!!

My birth story

I finished work on the 22nd October, after several weeks working from home. My maternity leave started on the following monday, the 25th. I had plans of resting and getting everything sorted but we still had guests, Uncle Rolf and Gangan. They left the next day, so i spent my time doing some errands, and pottering about. On the 26th I had been losing plug all day, every wipe there was more and more snotty type discharge. I knew this was a good sign so continued with my raspberry leaf tea and bouncing on my exercise ball. I googled for some other things to help and found that hula hooping on the wii fit helps so I did some of that too!

Later on that night I had to go to the loo where I had diarrhoea, very normal for pre birth so I got even more excited! I had a further bounce and possibly it was a bit violent!

I went to bed around 1 and woke up at 4 to find Denis still downstairs so I woke him up and dragged him of to bed. At 4:45 I woke with a start thinking i'd wet myself! I went to the loo and continued to leak for a while. I woke Denis up and he asked me if I was contracting, which I was but only mild so he went back to bed. I rang the hospital and let them know my waters had broken and was told to arrive around 9am. At this point I was sat on a towel in the nursery messing about on the laptop, I was texting my bump buddy Sarah who had her baby in September so I knew she would be up to talk to!

I wandered around the house for a bit, then I sneezed and all hell broke loose! I went to the loo and I had my bloody show, from that point on my contractions started and were every three to four minutes lasting a minute in total. I woke Denis up and he attached my tens machine for me. This was around half seven. He helped me to dress while I continued to have the most horrific pain imaginable. We packed the car and decided to head off around half 8. At this point I was screaming to Denis to hurry! I was begging him to run red lights!

We arrived at Bassetlaw Hospital and was shown to a room immediately. I'd asked for a water birth and was so relieved to be given the pool room, I hugged Denis as I was so happy I was going to get the birth I was hoping for. I was asked to jump on the bed to be checked, only to be told "oh that feels like a foot or a hand!" so the head of midwifery was called to double check and confirmed with a scan that Isla was breech! I asked for some pain relief, gas and air was provided and made me very sleepy. I remember holding on to the gas and air and not actually using it.

I was given two options, to deliver normally but there is a chance of the placenta being blocked and preventing oxygen for up to ten minutes which could cause brain damage, or have an emergency c section. There was no debate, I went for the section. From there it all went very quickly. I was fitted with tights, my jewellery was removed and my wedding ring taped up. I had an IV fitted and a catheter inserted. I was asked to walk down to theatre, now I've seen one born every minute and they get wheeled down so I protested a bit! I was leaking blood still and only had a gown on so the midwife wrapped a sheet around me.

I got into theatre and was told to climb the table, I couldn't get my legs up high enough, so they brought me a step to help me. Remember I'm still "in labour". They asked me to lean forward over my bump for the epidural and to stay still! Pretty hard when I was contracting every three minutes . They attached pads to my chest and wrapped a cuff around my arm to monitor my blood pressure. Denis was in scrubs and sat stroking my hair. A screen was placed so I couldn't see what was happening. They sprayed my belly with ice cold water to check I couldn't feel anything. At around 10am the surgery was started. It was weird, lots of tugging and pulling. There was loads of people in the room. It was quite surreal laid there not feeling anything.

At 10:27 Isla was born, bum first. They whisked her away to be checked and all was well. When she cried for the first time, I did too! They brought her to me and I asked for skin to skin while the surgeons were still working on me. After a few minutes Denis was asked to go through to recovery with Isla while I was being stitched up. It took half an hour before I joined them.

Once there I attempted breastfeeding, it was hard when I couldn't move but Denis helped me. We took some photos and got Isla dressed. she was weighed, 6lb 12! Not sure where this giant baby I'd been predicted was! We stayed in recovery until 3. We were wheeled to postnatal, room B1. Denis did a brilliant job of tending to Isla as I couldn't walk, and wouldn't be allowed up until the next day.

I didn't know that I would be bedridden for a day, which was upsetting, but I soon got over it. When 8pm came about I wasn't sure what I was going to do as I couldn't tend to Isla. I ended up calling on midwives to change her and to help her get off to sleep. Late that night I had a massive blood loss, which is normal but was a bit of a shock. Isla slept on and off all night. I kept waking up thinking I'd fallen asleep with her.

The next morning I was told I would be getting up. I wondered what it would be like not having a bump! Denis arrived at 9, so the health assistant removed my catheter, and helped me to shower. Denis had brought in lots of toiletries for me, and some clothes. Isla had also run out of clothes as we didn't expect to be staying overnight.

We spent the rest of the day enjoying our time as a family. Later on in the day we had our first guests, the grandparents. Not for too long, just an hour each. We were allowed home the next day, so in total had two nights in hospital. I learnt a lot from that experience.

Once home I had a bit of a funny turn, it was weird, i felt so secure and safe in hospital now i was at home it was all over whelming. I was crying my eyes out holding Isla feeling like she was going to get took of me or I'd do something stupid. The feeling passed after a week or so. I struggled to get up and about, but Denis did a stirling job of looking after us both. He had 3 weeks of work
