Had a big arguement with DH about horses

Basically i think its cruel to sit on a horse. DH said its ok but not ok for kids to sit on Donkeys. But i think its the same but on a bigger scale. :?

What do you think? (yeah i know it sounds really daft!) :rotfl:

hmmmmm

how is it cruel??

If we didn't ride them, they would have no real purpose, apart from food.

I dont know, when ever i see some one on a horse i just cant watch and makes me feel sorry for them.

I do agree if it is people who don't know how to ride and bounce about a lot etc, but skilled riders are very gently on the horse's back and mouth.

its not cruel, as long as the person on the back isnt too heavy and they get the right amount of rest then it is fine, donkeys are treated thre same way too now its the law :D

Ive seen the cruelty endured by some of the beach donkeys and I never let DD go on them. Kids dont have to ride them to enjoy them especially on a hot beach :(

No I dont think riding horses/donkeys is cruel so long as its the right environment and they are treated properly.

i think that girl from wife swap last night should be TOLD OFF (for lack of better phrase!)

Jumping up and down on that poor donkey/horse/pony (excuse my lack of knowledge!!) it was awful, i wanted to kick her! :shakehead:

I know what you mean, they are treated even worse abroad and i always feel so bad for them. I went to santorini in greece and one of the attractions (for want of a better word) was really steep (the island is basically a big mountain) and you could walk, get a taxi, cable car or ride up on a donkey...   poor creatures

It was a shavings fork .
When she was standing on it - that wouldn't have hurt it. I do that to my mum's pony to reach apples from the apple tree for her. If it was hurting the pony, it would have got her off sharpish.
She was probably a little rough climbing on it - but I used to do the same, and again, if it was in any pain it would have moved.

The girl was a bit of a brat, sadly I think her parents made her that way - but those horses were happy and healthy.

I'm sure if the horse really minded it would buck the rider off.

A ridden horse gets to go out walking all over the place, better than staying in a field all day.

LOL - true

not sure my horsey agreed with you on the 'out and about' bit. He always used to get annoyed when I took him away from his field.
BUT before anyone starts saying that he should have been left in his field - he would not exist if I didn't ride him. He is not a native that can live in a field 24/7 and therefore costs a lot to keep and feed. He needs to serve a purpose. That sounds heartless (I can assure he I lvoe him a hell of a lot! Never cried so much in my life when his loan family drove off with him) but if he couldn't be ridden then he would have no life.
Sadly most horses are too big and expensive to be kept as pets.

Sorry for rant - this is my specialist subject

I think the way horses are built they are fine to be ridden so long as the rider is mindful how they ride and treat them in general.

We went on hol to egypt last summer and camels are ridden by tourists everywhere and i have to say that out there they are not cared for at all, its really sad. Its baking hot (40c+) and they are whipped, pushed and worked all day everyday, i really felt for them!

Hopefully horses in Britain dont have to endure that

Well thats my opinion on it anyway, im not going to say anymore :)

I think it's cruel for people to keep horses unless they have land big enough to ride them. Where I live, people keep horses on their alottment's and ride them around the street, and the horses get stressed out because of the car's etc. And they make a mess in the road.

im not sure about riding them?? i dont think its cruel but wiping them  makes me feel sick, when i watched the nationals how hard they were getting wiped poor things

how bout i wipe the jocky and watch it run :x

I think horse riding is fine as long as they are happy and kept in the right environment by loving owners. Horses love to run & enjoy it!

I dont see the need for donkeys on beaches, they look soooo bored and alot of the owners mistreat them. Grrrr it makes me so angry it really does

lol

Dionne - I agree with you on the whipping front - however I would like to point out that alot of what you see is called scrubbing where they swish the whip so it makes a noise. Also the whips are designed so that the bit that touches the horse is completely flat meaning it does not hurt them. Racing whips are 100 times kinder than the whip I have, which has always annoyed me, as jockeys are trained to use a whip properly, yet anyone can buy a horse and then buy a whip that can do some real damage, physically and mentally to a horse.
