Hi everyone,
Me and my husband found out that our baby is a little girl at our last scan and are over the moon despite me being convinced that she was a boy!
We talked a lot about baby names even before we knew she was on her way and have settled on a name that I think is perfect!
We are of Spanish/ Mexican origin, and in Spain there is a tradition which like of calling daughters after mothers, and my mother is called Emily, and I dont really want my daughter to have the SAME name. However to respect this tradition I came across the name Amalia which I LOVE. Later we also found out that a shortened version of Amalia is Maya which I like even more, plus the links to my husbands Mexican roots etc.
However noone else that knows our choice seems to love it like I do. My husband says "he likes it and whatever makes me the happiest", my parents were like "yeah, hmm thats nice" and his were like "I dont like it!". I dont want to care about what anyone else thinks of the name as long as we like it, but now they are making me doubt myself!
What do you think?

Really like Maya. As long as you and oh like it ignore others xx

I really like Maya. Have you considered Amelia and Emilia? I really like Emily too, and also came across Everly which I love, but my husband likes traditional English names so I've had to take it off our list.

I think Amalia is lovely! Not sure about Maya. Makes me think of chocolate for some reason? No idea why.

Thats a lovely tradition x

i love amalia! not as keen in Maya but it is really pretty!

if u and your OH like it then go for it i say, theyll grow to like it

Most people don't like my daughters name (Constance) Connie for short, but i didn't care! It's your baby you can call her whatever you like x

i think id call her Amalia officially shorten it to Maya

I love the name Maya, I had a Belarusian friend at school called it and always thought it was pretty

I think they are both lovely! I'm sure the negative people in your family would end up loving it when they get used it. She'll grow into her name and they won't be able to imagine her being called anything else.

I like both, they are pretty names. For this reason we're not telling anyone esp parents our name choices as they won't say anything once baby is here if they don't like it!

Maya was on our shortlist! But I also love Amalia, so think you're on to a winner either way.
