I'm 12 wks, I have tried to quit about 9 times in the 6 yrs I have been smoking. After reading some of the posts on this board I realise I must quit to give our child the best possible chance. I don't have the willpower and the doctors wont help me cos the last time I tried to quit was less than 6 months ago. I can't afford NRT and I simply cannot quit "cold turkey" I have an awful temper, that is quelled by NRT. Any suggestions?

Aw hun that's very unfair of your doctor presumably he know you are now pregnant and want to give it another try what was his reason for not helping you. I don't smoke so I am sorry I can't offer you any advice.

But I did see a no smoking campaigne once and they suggested that if you have a glass of water with a straw constantly beside you, every time you want a cigerette take a sip of water this is meant to retrain your brain into think the craving is for water and not a ciggi. Apparently the straw is the trigger cos your dragging on it and get water instead of nicotine.

Best of luck hun.

I can't help - I am a semi-reformed smoker - I somehow managed to quit when OH and I started TTC but I have the odd one, but I would like to say what a fantastic idea from Smurf. Definitely worth a try!

Good luck quitting - you are doing the best thing for your baby (and you!)

There are loads of non smoking groups that have nothing to do with your GP, they can give you free or reduced price NRT
