Hi I am currently in my 10th week of pregnancy (1st pregnancy) and had nausea and sickness hit me like a bus at 7 weeks. I was admitted to hospital by my GP last week due to dehydration despite already being put on cyclizine by another GP but not really given great advice or support. As a paramedic I have been doing my own research via the internet and have found hyperemesis is rarely managed well by GP etc and little support on offer. I certainly am feeling isolated as have been sofa bound for 3 weeks and just wondering if anyone else is going through the same or has previously had and can offer any advice?

Sorry to hear your going through this. I had severe morning sickness, I never went to the Drs about it though, wish I had! I would be sick as soon as I woke up and then be sick at some point on the way to work and then usually at work. People gave me loads of advise about eating things with ginger in etc... it just didn't work for me. The best thing for me to do was leave my stomach empty and just sip water until lunch time and then just have small bites of food at lunch. I was feeling like this up until about six months and then it did start easing off but I was being sick throughout the pregnancy.
Everybody has their own way of coping and it might just be trial and error to find out what makes the sickness better/worse. Just try and put your feet up and rest, worrying about it won't help xx

I had HG. I would go back and push for more medication. Ondansetron is so much better than cyclizine and it sounds like you need more than just cyclizine. Google or facebook a charity called pregnancy sickness support. They have a lot of great info on and info you can show the doctor etc if you have to push for more meds. Some gps can be reluctant to prescribe and kinda clueless to it so just keep pushing. I was in twice on IV meds and rehydration drip.. does your hospital offer rehydration in the day unit as some do. This is where instead of being admitted you can go to day unit and they will put you on a drip in a bed there and then you can go home end of day all being well. I waited both times till I was very very unwell but if I went through it again I would organise the drip sooner. It's so hard..you feel so low. I was on sickness meds 3 times a day till around 16 weeks when started slowly weaning off. I was sick up until 24 weeks but from 16 to 24 weeks it was nothing like it had been. Some ladies stay on the meds the whole pregnancy . It came back a little in third tri but never to the point it had been before and once she was out It felt like it was all just lifted and I felt amazing. Just some hope that it does get better. From 16 weeks I could do normal things ie. function and see friends etc. xxxx

Ah hun sounds awful for you. I find that the GP and even the consultants at hospital aren't helpful with sickness or other illnesses and I think its because theirs either not much that can be done or they arent aware of certain treatments. I would do some research on medication and go back to GP. Xx

Hi - i have HG I'm 24 weeks and still vomiting 20+ times throughout a day. Mine was bad from week 6-14. I lost 10kg in first tri. I havent needed IV fluids since 14 weeks, but still spend most of my days in bed, the longest i have been out of bed is 5 hours. Rest is what helps me. I'm currently on my 7th combination of meds. It was my 4th admission to hospital before I got put on ondansatron so you may need to ask for it. I found ondansatron to be what helped the most for me. It is like it shuts down your digestive system though - nothing comes up, and nothing comes out the other end either, so make sure if you go on ondansatron you also get on a laxitive, such as lactulose. Make sure your midwife refers you to a specialist - with HG babies can be smaller so you will need growth scans. Also the specialist can refer you to a dietician if needed or a physio. I'm going to a physio because being bed bound for 4 months has left me very weak. I've also been seen by the perinatal mental health team - this is such an isolating illness, so having as much support as you can get is important. I'm also in a facebook group - i think its called hyperemesis gravidarum and pregnancy sickness (uk group). Join that for support from women who are going through the same thing. Oh yeah and since youre a paramedic I would give the rcog guidelines a read over to see your treatment options and to make sure your dr is up to date with current practise, it was only updated in 2016 so they may not have read it over before seeing you. You can find it online by googling. Hope that helps and I hope you get some relief soon. Xo

I've had HZ twice it's a terrible illness, I'm sorry you are suffering. I completely agree with what is being said - go back to your GP armed with the guidelines and demand ondanestron. Clearly the cyclizind is not enough for you, I was told if you don't get relief after /4 hours the drugs aren't working. I was a lot better this time because I was prepared and very pushy with the gp. I only had 5 weeks off in the end and managed until 20 weeks on reduced hours and just going back this week on normal hours. Take the time you need and rest as much as possible as movement and tiredness only makes it much worse. I'm still on my meds but managing to live relatively normally at 22 weeks. I still feel sick pretty much all the time but rarely vomit now. I would also join pregnancy sickness support as suggested above, they have a support forum but can also help with HG friendly GPs and you can speak to someone on their helpline to get support and advice.

Skye way - so sorry you are having such a terrible time. I hope things ease off for you a bit in the next few weeks as there is another hormone drop around 25/26 weeks.

I've been diagnosed with HG too I'm 12 weeks and been on cyclizine since I was 5 weeks. I didn't suffer with this in my first pregnancy so it has been a complete shock and really difficult to deal with being a working mum to a very active 15 month old. I've just spoke to my dr who is going to give me a prescription tomorrow for some new medication so I'm hoping this helps! It's so awful and I feel like no one actually understands so although I'm sorry you ladies are also going through this I'm thankful I'm not alone with it!

I have HG too. I'm still sick at 21+4 weeks. Started at 7 weeks for me but constant nausea from 3 weeks. At old practice we don't have a set doc so 2 different GPs gave me 2 different anti sickness meds. They helped for about a day. Honestly the dissolve on gums one made me MORE ill because my body was trying to bring it up but couldn't so it was just getting worse and worse. I stopped taking meds when it was clear they were having no positive effect. I found at 16 weeks I felt fine for a week then it came back with a vengeance (I thought it was overrrr). Its been getting even worse the past 2 weeks. I've lost over 2.5st in total and was at the correct weight for my height pre pregnancy, so its not like that was excess weight. I fortunately work at home and only need to check in with the office once per month but its a long journey and kills me going. I've decided to take my mat leave ASAP at 29 weeks so that I can actually rest and recuperate pre baby.

I found in tri 1 it was best to just not eat anything if I didn't feel up to it. Mint was the only thing that eased it off a little, so I sucked on polos if I felt up to it. But eating made it worse, I couldn't finish a meal, meds and vits didn't stay down. I was sick about 15 times a day. Now I am sick less but more severely and I feel pretty much like death ALL DAY LONG. I am able to eat a little more than mints now. Once cravings kick in it does help. I find I can ONLY eat foods I crave now. I had my scan recently and baby is perfectly healthy so don't worry about that side of things. I'm so sorry you're suffering this too. At least the way I see it is labour will be a cake walk after 9 months of HG!!
