Hv said not to wean until

Our HV said as long as she was sitting a little better than she didn't have to be completley un aided. It's just so they can sit up straightish in order to be fed.

Savannah was weaned at four months and at the time we fed her mostly sat up in her vibrating chair because her high chair wasn't up. She was fine.

I was under the understanding that human digestion had nothing to do with being able to sit up, in fact you could digest food just as easily standing on your head. I think it's best to wait for as long as possible but most people know when the time is and going by that link L is ready already apart from the weight thing lol, he sits chewing while I'm eating my cornflakes.

Also, did you know most babies don't actually have the means of extracting the nutrients from the food they eat until 6 months +...

So if yo fill baby up with food she can't get the nutrients from it will fill baby up but not benefit them x

Don't worry Hun, you won't miss out, there will be loads of mealtimes to come xx

Its true that sitting up doesn't affect their ability to digest, but it will affect their ability to swallow - I mean, would you want to be a slumped and stuff sting your dinner lol xx

I tend to agree with the waiting until 6 months or very close to 6 months esp if you are going down BLW route. They do show you when they are ready and to me it seemed more than watching and practice chewing, Kynon was literally grabbing the food out of my hand when holding him. O will def let you know when he is ready which will prob be near the 6 month mark naturally, you will have weekends to enjoy weaning as well remember and he will prob be well on his way by 7 months when you return.

Ok I just read those 2 article and feel like their both saying different things about the signs. In the one from babycentre Leandros doing all the signs to start but mumsnet say it should be taken with a pinch of salt?

They are saying very similar thing - look at the baby and decide, his mother will know him better.

Does he watch you when you eat, does he grab your food? Can he sit up in his highchair? Has he doubled his weight?
I PERSONALLY wouldnt wean at 4 months and my LO doubled his weight much earlier than 6 months and at 4 months they have a huge growth spurt that a lot of people mistake for need to wean. If you stick it out and feed them milk, it settles and they go back to going longer between feeds.

My LO is between 98th and 99.6th centile but even I was told he didnt need weaning earlier and guess what, he was perfectly fine but I was watching him and decided to do it around 5 and a half months

Ladies are right re slumping, it increases a risk of choking. I completely missed the puree stage as he was ready for more textured foods by 6, think about how much easier it is not to make those stage 1 purees?

Also remember when you first wean you will be only giving one meal a day for a while, Caitlin didn't go to three meals a day til 9 months. Food is fun before one, ( though we did baby led weaning)

I wouldn't do it until they are 6 months old and even then I will stay clear from
Gluten until almost 1 year old. Ofc you can do it even at 4 months old but a baby's digestive system is quite immature until 6 months and you can end up doing more harm than good. Ofc million of baby's started purees from our parents generation at 3-4 months and turned up to be ok but I will not risk it if I can hold LO. After all he will have his whole life ahead to eat solids lol...

I've always been told that you should wean at 6 months, although I thought that that was more important for bf babies so they benefit from the breastmilk as long as possible and that for formula fed babies it didn't matter so much if you started waening at 5ish months or so. Never heard about the sitting up thing, but I suppose it does make sense.

Just out of curiosity...why no gluten til 1 year. My LO has a suspected cows milk allergy & when I was looking thro the ingredients to the baby cereals & jars, alot of them have gluten in them! My LO has been on baby porridge (with gluten in) and he's taken a bad reaction (he was on it for a week) now i'm just gonna give puree'd fruit & veg, do u think its ok to do that. It seems like your "supposed" to use the cereals/jars? Esp for early weaning.

The earlier you introduce gluten the greater is the risk of coeliac disease. That was the reason that the guidelines were moved from 4 to 6 months really. It's probably safe for most babies to start using gluten at 6 months.
1 year is a personal preference based on following reasons
- there are quite a lot of allergies in both of our families not on gluten but i will no risk it as coeliac is a terrible thing and hard to diagnose also.
- gluten is in ailments like bread, rusk etc... That is not the most important thing for small babies as they can get all the fiber they need just fine from fruits and vegetables so I don't see the point of introducing a low nutritional and empty calorie food ( in comparison ofc wih others).

As about ready made food jar, cereals etc I consider that they are there for parents convince and i would only feed those to my baby while I'm vacation for example and out of food.
My plan is fresh meat cooked with fresh vegetables, fruits, yogurt and later fish and egg and that's all until almost 1 year . At one year I will start introducing slowly cereals but not as a whole meal more as an ingredient of a meal for example inside a soup or sth like that.

But those are only personal preferences. Most babies do fine from 6 months. Don't give gluten though to less than 6 months old. I you have to wean there are plenty other things you can give before 6 months.
As about the gluten your LO is getting through formula I am not 100 % sure bur probably there is a dose dependent effect. You may need a certain amount to get a reaction ifykwim. Toucan probably google that and see what you can find, I would t worry though so mug about that.

That's interesting! Tbh i don't know much about things like gluten so defo worth looking into thank you!

Hope thanks once again for great advice/knowledge.

I think I might do the same thing about gluten, given my LO's problems (severe reflux & possible CMA) I dont see the harm in it. I know they advise fruit & veg for further on weaning. I'm just starting out, LO has only been on solids for 1 week, and alot of the things on shelves are cereals with wheat/porridge/rice, which made me think they should have these things.

So you would see no harm at all in a fruit/veg/meat diet until 1yr? Is it essential they have some sort of carbohydrate? What would you advice...pasta/rice/potatoes?? Its so confusing & im terrified of getting it wrong. My LO is already not very well & thats just thro baby milk.

My LO is 6 m/o & has been weaning for a week (only on the powder porridge) my plan now is to give only puree'd banana for around 5 days, then maybe puree'd carrot for a few days then potato? And then form a new plan of action!!

Thanks again

my LO was gluten free until he was one my sister is intollerant to gluten, and he had terrible colic and lactose intollerance. It was so hard cos a lot of foods designed for weaning have gluten.

In terms of carbs, he had mashed potato, baby rice, and gluten free pasta when he was a bit older. rice cakes are fab and I always keep gluten free bread in the freezer so my sister can have toast when she visits and he ended up eating her toast a lot. I found gluten free bread sticks are too hard for LOs until they have molars.

Fruits and vegetables are all carbohydrates. I see no harm on potatoes as a part of a meal but it's not the most nutritional of all of you know what I mean. You probably mean starch?
I will include carrots and sweet potatoes but if you decide against gluten for some time beware of pastas as they contain gluten. Probably I will give some rice later on still as a part of a meal like in a soup but not at the beginning as its mostly empty nutritionally carbohydrates.
What babies are designed to digest easier is a high lipid moderate protein and carbohydrate food, after all that's what milk is lol :)
I think go slowly and add each food slowly like a new ailment every week and watch how LO is doing with it.
That's what I am planning to do anyway.

after a while I had a collection of ice cube trays with various purreed veg and when he was a bit older I had some cubes of mashed potato, I used to heat one cube of potato and 2 of various veg and add cream (he was a skinny thing!) It was like baby pick n mix :p

That's interesting about the glueton hope. It does make me wonder if a lot of the problems like ceoliac and IBS with our generation stem from being given solids too early. I just can't see what everyone's rush is to wean these days, it makes sense to me that a baby is ready once they are sitting and can get food into their mouths, its mother natures way of making babies develop in the right order so they are ready!

Titch - I was thinking of doing the ole ice cube tray thing...can I ask a cpl of Q's?....did you just put the ice cube tray straight into the top compartment or did you wrap it first? How many cubes would you advise for first weaning...6 m/o...maybe 2? Also...(sorry!)....can you puree & freeze banana

xxxxxxxxxxxxx

dunno about the banana, I just mashed a bit of one up and ate the rest myself

but yes, sterilise the trays, add the purree, wrap in cling film, then one theyre frozen pop them out into a sterilised tupperware pot or similar.

I started with just one but LO was small. We were up to 3 cubes by 9/10 months I think. I wish Id written it down more, I cant remember much anymore!

I must admit I strongly disagree with weaning early but that's just my opinion and I'm certainly not going to tell anyone how to raise their child because I'd not take kindly to anyone telling me what to do with my lo so it makes it difficult to comment on any of these threads as it feels like a lot of people are weaning early at the moment and I really don't agree with it, to me the guidelines are there for a reason and food is supposed to just be fun for them until they are one so they don't need it for nutrition or for filling them up until they are at least 9 mths to a year. That's just my opinion though, so I'm probably best just to stick to the blw threads so I don't offend anyone lol ;-)
