Well it was at the 11th hour that I got my Chlamydia results back, so I didn’t know if I was going to be able to get the HSG done until the day before, what a mad rush!

I was quite nervous about it because at my last HSG in December 2012 the doctor (who was training to do the procedure) took ages to find my cervix and then couldn’t get the catheter in so it was painful and stressful and even after getting a colleague to help they had to give up. I mentioned this at the hospital and they assured me that this doctor was very experienced and it shouldn’t be a problem!

He found my cervix after having to try a different speculum and change my position, but then apparently had been given the wrong sponge clip, it was too short and the nurse had to go and get the correct one! So I had to wait again but I was much more comfortable this time. It hurt when the tube and dye went in but the doctor and nurse were really kind and assured me it would be over soon!

I’d almost forgotten about the suspected blockage as I turned to look at the screen, I’d been focusing on whether the HSG was going to happen or not! As it happened, all the dye went through! There was no blockage! Unless the dye pushed it out, it was pumped in really hard! He said my tubes were both distended and wider at the end near the ovary but an egg would still be able to pass along. The tubes looked really long and spirally though! He said they don’t look neat like they do in the diagrams and aren’t usually spirally but it isn’t unheard of! I’m not sure if it was the force of the dye making them spiral! They looked about 3 times longer than they should be though! So maybe that’s why I’m not getting pregnant, the sperm are all getting fed up going round bend after bend like an upwards helter-skelter! And meanwhile by the time the egg has made its way in the other direction its past its use by date!

My head was swimming with info so I didn’t get to ask all the questions I’m now thinking of, but hopefully I can ask at the clinic once they’ve got the results and we’re ready to take the next step.

My tummy felt so sore that evening, almost as sore as when I had the lap and dye! I could hardly move! What’s that all about?

Anyway so I won’t need a laparoscopy now and as the tubes aren’t blocked I won’t need them removed. I’m SO relieved I can’t tell you! I was kind of still in disbelief thinking I might have to get them removed; I’d refused to believe it really, :shakehead: so the worst case scenario hasn’t happened! I think we’ll still need IVF because it’s just taking so long, but hopefully we can have it soon rather than wait till the autumn! Phew!!

Aww, really pleased for you blueflower. Let's hope you get started on the ivf soon :)

Thank you! Has anyone else whose had an HSG got spirally tubes?! I've googled it but found nothing!

Yay that's great news!!! Xxxx good luck with ivf!

I am so glad it wasn't painful for you and that you won't need a lap and tubes removed, must be a huge relief. I don't know anything about the spirally tubes but hopefully someone will come along who knows more about it xx

That is good news for you. Very interesting about your spirally tubes too, I shall have a look at mine when I go for my hsg and see how spirally they are :)

So pleased it went well!! One of mine was v spirally, I think it was the left! I didn't question it actually, they just said they don't actually look how they do in diagrams! What is your next step now, starting IVF?

I had my HSG on Friday, I can't actually remember what the screen looked like now, I was more focused on seeing if the dye was spilling out the end of the tubes like Google showed me! I've got a follow up appointment on 4th April so hopefully I can see it in more detail then. Glad it was good news :) x

Oh I am pleased for you, what a relief! I hope the hsg has a good effect on your fertility this month before you start looking at starting IVF xxx

Great news :) yes it's meant to make u more fertile isn't it? Maybe u won't need IVF, fingers crossed for you xx

I have my hsg on the 9th April not looking forward to it, praying for a bfp this month!

When will u find out re IVF or the plan for you now ?

Lou xx

That’s good, I’m glad I’m not a curly freak then!

In what way does an HSG make you more fertile? Just that the tubes are nice and clean? I did an OPK this morning actually, not expecting it to be positive and there was a really dark line without clomid, wow! We’d better make the most of it!

I expect I’ll get a letter from the clinic this week but if not, I’ll call them up and ask about starting IVF. At our last consultation he said after my laparoscopy and 2 months recovery to contact the nurse on Day 1 to start the drugs but I would have thought they’d take a while to organise and don’t you have to start them on Day 1? I might ask ladies on the IVF thread, they might know!

Thank you for all your lovely replies! :)

My consultant said that the contrast irritates the lining like a biopsy and therefore makes implantation more likely therefore increasing likelihood of pregnancy! He has given me 3 months after my scan and if not pregnant then IVF

Good luck blue flower hopefully this is ur road to a BFP :)

Oh that's interesting! Thank you and good luck to you too! :clover:

Amazing news blue flower- I keep popping in here to check on you as I know it will happen for you one day. Sounds like you're a little bit closer!!

Baby dust all over you!!!!!!

Just had a bit of a setback. Got a letter from the clinic saying they still want me to have a laparoscopy to check the condition of the tubes! He said I can go ahead with IVF but should stay on the waiting list for the op as well! I can't understand why, the tubes were fine and the surgeon said it definitely wasn't a hydrosalpinx.
DH says its up to us and as we're paying we don't have to go for the lap if we don't think its necessary. The cynical part of me thinks that the clinic want to get my tubes removed so we'll have to pay for IVF every time we want a baby! I know that's silly but its a bit upsetting when I thought everything was fine now. :(

Did you have you hsg privately? If so ask for the images and get a second opinion perhaps? You don't need your tubes for IVF so as long as you don't have a hydrosalpinx which can be toxic, what does it matter if your tubes are not totally top notch? Urgh, confusing xx

I know its really weird and confusing! Yes I did have the HSG privately and the surgeon would have sent a report to our clinic, probably with pictures as well!

But I really want to keep my tubes, I know I don't need them for IVF but I'd like to have the option of a natural pregnancy instead of relying on clinics, especially as there isn't anything major wrong with either of us. I'd feel less of a woman without them, a friend said to me "I bet you'd rather have a finger cut off wouldn't you?" and I agreed!

I think we'll just go ahead with the IVF but think of my name still being on the waiting list for a laparoscopy as a kind of back-up, just in case.

It is confusing, i would be the same, if the tubes won't affect IVF then keep them! If it turns out scar tissue or something else tube related that's not a hydrosalpinx is causing you not to get pregnant then that won't affect IVF chances either as tubes are bypassed, that's my understanding anyways...so had be going for the IVF ASAP too. Urgh, all such a hoo hah isn't it! X
