I'm leaving my 9.5 month old with OH for a half day this week (first time we'll have been apart!) and I plan on leaving him some expressed milk for her afternoon feed. I've no idea how much I need to express though. We had a practice just before Christmas and I managed to express 3.5 oz in one session and she drank 2 of them. That doesn't seem very much though, so presumably I need to do a few sessions to leave a bit more; but how much?

Well I managed to collect/express 5 oz in preparation and she drank half while I was out, so I guess she drinks less than I'd imagined.

Only just seen your post. I ebf and hoping to leave lo with parents for afternoon so ive started expressing, I was shocked at the fact that I managed to express 5 oz in one sitting! I was told by a breastfeeding peer supporters to have 7 oz ready for each feed but baby will take between 2 and 7.

It took me a full day to get 5 oz!

My lo is only 15 weeks and only just started sleeping through the night so admittedly this 5 oz was in the morning when was full. In the day I only manage 1 oz if that a time! Are you freezing your milk? If so how much do you tend to defrost for a feed? I can't bear the thought of defrosting a whole 7 oz for him to only have 2 then have to throw rest away...

Sorry, we don't usually express; this was a one off for a trip to the theatre. Wish mine would sleep through the night!!

I left LO with grandparents for a few hours and she drank 9oz of expressed milk between 8pm-11pm!!!

If you find you haven't left enough milk out and need to defrost more, you can defrost the milk in a jug of warm water you just need to heat it up once fully defrosted. xx
