Hi

I was booked in for a GTT test ages ago - but due to Spd and being almost house bound, im struggling to get to it?!?
also if i dont eat little and often i get nausea and feel faint. so dont feel i could starve myself lol
im leaving it late now as it needs to be done around 28 weeks. but everytime i speak to a midwife or any one they just dont seem to understand that i CANT get to it!! My husband has the car almost 12 hours a day and has just started a new job (takes enough time off for midwife appts) and a taxi would cost a fortune.
I feel fine and i've had a recent scan and they say that baby looks healthy and the right size etc
So im not that concerned!! But am i just being selfish??
has anyone else had this test done??
i dont want to put my baby at risk - but have been told its highly unlikely i have diabetes as my blood level was 6.8 (slightly High) and i have glucose in my urine (but i do eat a lot of chocolate and sugary food - seem to crave it)
xxxx

hi hun based on what u have said i would say u need to go to it !! sounds to me like your body isnt processing sugars effectively thats why u have glucose in your wee and slightly high blood results. understand where u r coming from with the spd and not being able to get to it, isnt there someone u could ask to help u out ?
sorry know this probably isnt what u want to hear xxxx

Speaking from someone who ad the GTT test and was diagnosed diabetic and Im now on insulin I would say it's important you have it. They wouldnt send you for it if they didnt think it was important :(

My babies measurments were fine up to 30 weeks..My fundal measurement is still spot on but my baby is large due to diabetes! Also, when he is born because of my sugar levels he may have produced extra insulin which will make his blood sugar levels go really low which can be dangerous for him.

Think they offer these tests to make sure you if you do have diabetes that you are in the best possible place...for example I was booked in at a birth centre but now have to have him at the hospital because I will need a drip!

Im not here to scare you, just offering my opinion but I do think it's important you get it checked just incase xxxx

thanks guys!
i think i needed to be scared into it lol, i do want to do the best for my baby, and believe me i have tried to get people to take me there, but family and friends dont live near enough :(

jaxx - i didnt realise it can cause problems with baby after the birth - i just thought it was a problem with mum and processing the sugars. when were you diagnosed with it?? was it around the 28week mark? does it clear up after birth?

i will ring them and explain again and see if they can do anything to help.

xxxxx

whether you eat lots of sugar or not your pancreas should be able to cope therefore, not have a blood sugar of that level. Ive had the GTT and its not a problem, my dad & sister are Type 1 diabetic and my mum type 2...my sugar came back at 4.5 so hun, get it done. Dont want to scare you but if you run high sugar and baby has high sugar levels when it is born it could be in intensive care on a drip or being monitored, this will all mean that you wont be able to have baby with you, you will have to be on another ward entirely, you dont need to put yourself or your child through this

Are there any busses that run near you? Or im afraid you may have to bite the bullet and get a taxi, if you do end up in hospital after birth because you didn't get the insulin then it will cost you and OH a lot more than taxi fare in parking and petrol for him to come visit you and LO, they wouldn't send you for it if it wasn't needed my urine and bloods are both fine but i had to have it done due to high BMI, so if your bloods and urine are showing signs then you should definatly go. Maybe offer a friend or family petrol money to take you?
I dont want to sound harsh but your midwife should have stressed how important it was to get you to go in. x

Yes unfortunately it does affect them and can also make delivery difficult as their abdomens grow out of proportion sometimes...

its not nice to think about but if you have GD then you need to get the advice and help asap!

I was diagnosed at 28 weeks and normally it goes after the pregnancy although they have told me to expect a formal diagnosis after :( xx

Hi

....but have been told its highly unlikely i have diabetes as my blood level was 6.8 (slightly High) and i have glucose in my urine (but i do eat a lot of chocolate and sugary food - seem to crave it)

going by the abnormal glucose levels and glucose in urine I would say it was LIKELY you would need to go for your GTT, not unlikely. I'd shell out for the cab personally.

I agree with what everyone has said...... Another GD sufferer here, although I'm managing it just through diet alone.....
My blood sugars were literally .1 higher than yours and I had glucose in my urine too, so I would definitely urge you to just go do the test.

Thanks Guys!!
This has helped ALOT, its finally kicked my butt into gear - im going to go and have it done Tomorrow!!!...panicking a bit though.
When i spoke to everyone at the doc's, midwife and others they didnt really stress the importance of it and just said i should book in when i can....... didnt explain any of the side effects etc

does anyone no how long it takes for the results???

I got my results back within 48 hrs :) hope that helps xx

They know within a couple of days. They'll contact you ASAP prob by phone if you do have GD. Otherwise you'll get a letter still within days.

I was dreading my GTT. But the actual test was ok. You fast from the night before (you can still have water). You go in and they take a fasting blood sample. They give you a glucose drink (which was like a lime drink and not sickly for me) and then they get you to wait for a couple of hours and then do another blood sample. I actually had a nice chat with the other ladies who were also having the GTT.

My next appointment is my 28 week appointment and my midwife mentioned I would have to do more bloods, but she hasn't mentioned fasting or being there for any length of time, or is this blood test for something else?

GTT is for blood sugar to do with diabetes, they will tell you whether its a fasting one or not its also based on family history of diabetes and whether you show up sugar in your urine, so dont worry benjysmum they would have told you. If you are still worried call your MW and ask xxx
