How accurate is abdominal scan.

Aw god PB, you sure have a time of it with hospitals and the like! The main thing is baby was there with heart beating away, try not to worry too much, Internal scans are more detailed at this stage so it's probably just to do with the abdominal scan and because the baby is so teeny tiny at this stage I would imagine the measurements are hard to get accurate. This WILL be your rainbow but I know the worry will never cease, just take care of yourself x

Hi everyone I'm looking for some advice.. Basically I got a positive test on 29th December and worked out that I was approx 8 weeks this week. I went for a scan yesterday to be told that I was measuring 5 weeks and it stated in my notes that a heartbeat was detected. I was scanned abdomanally so I'm confused how a heart beat can be detected so early and my dates being so out?

Hayley not sure how that was possible at 5 weeks. I had a private scan at 7+3 it was vaginal they don't / didn't do abdominal scans in very early pregnancies as you see much more vagiinally. I got to see a tiny blob with a heart beat.

i had 3 early scans, i thought i was further on than i was, none of which hurt or caused any harm, they get a better view of the baby from an internal.

internal scans are much more accurate although the age of the baby will just be a guess as they all grow at different times until they are 12 weeks!

i went from measuring 3 weeks to 6 weeks within 2 weeks and the same again, i went from 6 to 9 weeks in 2 weeks, then when i had my dating scan i was 13 weeks!

babies grow very quickly and the age is just a guide, if you have seen the heartbeat the chances of losing the baby are lowered.
