Well as you all know I needed cuddles the other day after I received a letter and spoke to a horrible lady in hospital!!Regarding pain relief in labour.

I went yesterday, no body had my notes great start!!!!!!! To cut a long story short the doctor said they are not perpared to give me any spinal or epidural when im in labour due to the fact I have had problems with my lower spine about 5 years ago! I always thought I wouldnt have one anyway but yesterday I come out crying saying yo OH what if I cant do it without an epidural!! I have no other options but to!! :(

They also said if I needed a c section I would have to be put to sleep, I feel so down today because I am worried to death about giving birth as it is and now I feel like I am going to make myself ill! I didnt sleep a wink last night!!!

On the plus side baby is head down measuring 34cms at 32 weeks!!

Thanks for letting me rant ladies think Im going to be Ok?

just try to think positive hun. i know it musn't help if you feel scared already.
Really look into other forms of pain relief. Maybe try waterbirth, or even consider having a home birth. Both ways you can't have an epidural anyway, so maybe if you try these ways you wont be worrying of the fact you cant have an epi, because it isnt possibe, not because of your back.

I agree stay positive hun and look into all the forms of pain relief

I was really scared with my second son because i wanted an epidural but if i had one i had to go to our main hospital which is horrible n not our local one which is lovely but they cant give epidurals there. I wanted one coz i'd had one with my first and didnt htink i'd cope not having one and was really worried thinking i wouldnt cope with the pain etc. However i didnt have one and it was all fine. When ur in labour u do just cope with it and get through it,even though the thought of it is terrifying! You will be ok,honestly!!!!!

try and stay postive hun, fingers crossed it all goes well for you

 gatecrashing here, just wondered if you're worried about it, why not try some form of relaxation? Hypnobirthing cd or something like that? My friend was really worried about it all and she got a hypnobirthing cd, ended up being so relaxed she didn't think about an epidural once. She gave birth in the pool. Maybe worth a try I know others on here have used it, maybe they can recommend something.

The best thing my friend told me was that I'd be really surprised just how much pain you can cope with labour. What you can cope with is FAR FAR more than what you think you can cope with. It's so true. Lots of hugs here, I thought I wasn't going to be able to have an epidural as I have a problem with my spine. Thankfully I was able to but I did face the prospect of it so I can understand how you're feeling.

Purpleblered, I was thinking about some sort of relaxation, because the thing is its like I have had the one chance of the strongest pain relief being taken away I think that I need something to help me though otherwise I am going to be so worried when labour comes!1

My OH keeps saying you will be fine because you know you have got to be for you and baby awhhhh :D

So did you have an epidural?

xx

It's so true that being worried and anxious will make the pain worse. It's so true, I look back at my labour experience and I can pinpoint when the pain significantly increased was when I got a new midwife after a change in shift who I couldn't understand (I'm deaf) and she made no effort to communicate with me in the way the DH asked her to. Before that, I'd been coping with the pain and breathing well and was really positive. Yes I ended up with an epidural, but I'd been in labour for 13 hours by that point! He was back to back as well. I am certain that if I'd had a more communicative midwife I may just have lasted much longer without needing an epidural, it turned out that Isaac was stuck and I ended up with a section anyway. But I know my experience would have been so much more different had I been able to be more relaxed. They tried the epidural to see if it would work, otherwise I'd have had to have a general for the section. I was just lucky that it worked. Can I ask what the problem with your back is? I know a bit about backs (I'm a physio!) have they said it is absolutely a no no or would they not even try?

I'd go for hypnobirthing, maybe look on the hypnobirthing website and see if they run courses near you? I'm going to try it next time, as it now turns out the only pain relief I can have is an epidural!!

Its a hole in my spine and because they dont know exactly where the hole is and where my spinal cord stops they dont want to administer an epidural!!! I am worried to death but like you said I think the best options is to just relax and see how things go!!!

I will have a look at that website though! Sorry to hear about the awkward midwife I hope mine is ok!!

  Sorry to hear your appointment didn't go too well. Lots of people say the gas & air or pethadine is great. Plus your recovery time after an epidural is a lot longer. I know loads of people who have had a birth with the epi & without & they normally say without is best. Just try to stay positive.

Its so natural to be nervous about this, but my attitude is: That baby is coming out what ever way it happens and you can cope with it, which ever way it goes.

Try to relax about it because if your tense and stressing things will be harder during labour, easier said than done I know but I think you'll be fine

Oh, big hugs  I know how you feel in a way as I was told yesterday that I won't be allowed to labour in water as I'm classed as high-risk and will need constant monitoring. I had left my birth plan quite open apart from knowing that I definitely want to labour in the pool if its free, but that's the one thing I can't do. Plus I have to see an anaesthetist too in 4 weeks time to discuss epidural as I have a recurring slipped disc which may cause problems - they've already said they will only do a c-section as a very last resort because they would rather not operate due to this stupid blood-clotting thing, so if they say I can't have an epi either I'm going to be gutted!

Sorry to jump on your thread and rant, I meant to come and offer you hugs and sympathy

I'm trying a natal hypnotherapy CD at the moment and I'm hoping that it will keep me calm, relaxed and focused in labour and let me believe that my body can do it naturally like women have done for thousands of years, so that I hopefully won't need any major pain relief other than gas and air. That's the plan, anyway!!!

Thanks for all the positive replies ladies!! I think the best advise I can take from you all is just to relax and go with the flow because whatever way baby arrives... its going to happen!!

Kaybee I hope you have the news you want at your next appointment because as you can imagine I know how it feels to have an option just taken away from you!!Let me know how you get on!!!

I think I am going to look into this hypo birthing where do I start?

xx
