Just wondered if anyone has had one, what were your experiences good and bad? I would love one, had a quick easy birth and labour last time, but hubby really against it as he thinks it's too dangerous. Any thoughts?

I was going to have one but on the day no midwives were available to come out :( it's no more dangerous than giving birth in a hospital, in fact research has shown that you're actually less likely to need intervention at home because you're more relaxed and calm in your own environment. I also did natal hypnotherapy for pain relief and man it worked! Highly recommended! I would research, research, research home births to get the statistics you need.

Oh and be prepared for a whole lot of negativity! Arm yourself with facts, figures and research x x

Thanks Helen, I read your posts in the other thread similar to this one too. Think I'll keep working on the hubby and get mw to talk to him too, what might change is mind is he won't have to stop drinking the last few weeks to drive me to hospital lol! Men are easily pleased!

I was going to have one but like Helen, there were no midwives on the night shift able to come out, so I either had to hope my baby would come during the day when there were enough midwives (you have to have 2), or go into hospital. So I did most of my labour at home with midwives popping in to see if I was anywhere near giving birth, but when it got to about 8 at night we decided to go into hospital because I 'wasn't allowed' to deliver until 8am the next morning!!
Really I got the best of both worlds as I had midwives at home and then got hospital care too. Plus the midwives followed us in their car to the hospital and got me in a room immediately :)
And they don't think any less of you if you do decide you want to go to hospital, so if you go for a home birth to begin with then you kind of have a choice on the day!

I did wonder about trying to labour for as long as possible at home then go in at the last minute. Suppose I'll just have to see how the pregnancy progresses first as well!

Many friends have homebirthed. Sometimes there can be probs and they will need to take you in, but usually things are fine.

One friend had two older daughters and knew what she was doing, was well-read in the areas too, and even knew how dilated she was. She gave birth before any midwives showed up. another friend simply had a quick and sudden birth in her bathroom :))

They are good because providing you are having a low risk pregnancy, they ARE safe. You can relax in your familiar and comfortable surroundings, you can eat your own food, choose where in the house you labour and birth, and if you want a waterbirth and have hired a pool, you're guaranteed to get a pool! Unlike in the hospital.

If you opt for one, they will leave the labour kit at yours, but you aren't then obliged to stay home if you change your mind. You can only have gas and air though. If you decide you want anything stronger, you will need to go in.

Sounds good purplehippy! Think your more relaxed at home. I'm not bothered about pain relief as I'm more scared of it making me sick than any pain (I'm phobic!). Planning on hypnobirthing, tens machine and a pool, but hey you never know how things might pan out!
