My baby is 11 days old and until today has poo'd several times a day. Today she has only done one tiny poo at lunchtime. She has been screaming since dinner time and seems to be really straining.

Is there anything I can do to help her? Ive tried massaging her tummy and holding her legs up to her chest. I read online about giving her a small amount of cooled water. Has anyone any knowledge of whether this is ok? X

I used cooled boiled water with my daughter Hun and it helped. Out of interest are you formula feeding? I formula fed my daughter and the first formula she was on she didn't agree with and had terrible constipation etc, ended up changing her formula in the end and after a week she had no more problems xx

Bicycling legs can help and also a warm bath. My health visitor said you can give an ounce or two of cooled boiled water which I have done on occasion from when my lo was only a few weeks old. As far as I'm aware there's no age on this. You should make sure the water has only been boiled once xx

Yes she is formula fed. Ive tried bicycle legs but will give a warm bath a go. She's still not managed to pass anything and seems quite agitated. Midwife is coming out today so I'll ask her too x

What formula do you use? Obviously every baby is different but I had problems with SMA and know loads of other people who had to stop using it too due to same issues x

We're using aptamil. I never thought I'd care so much about a poo!! X

Ahhhhh I switched to Aptamil from SMA and stopped having issues, just shows how differently kiddies react to different formulas! Hope the water helps and that the midwife can give you some advice hun :) xxx

Thank you for your help. She's just poo'd so the water must have done the trick! X

My health visitor warned us not to use sma because of constipation h16!

Yeah it is notorious for causing problems! I didn't know about its bad rep until after I had problems with it and did a Google! Think a lot of first time mums buy it as it is by far the cheapest formula plus apparently years ago it was the best and had a brilliant rep so my mum and others her age told me it was good. Clearly it had gone downhill since then!

Oddly enough we found Aptamil caused constipation in my eldest and we switched to HiPP. It's crazy how differently each child reacts, I think my LO just had a really sensitive tummy when he was new. Rainbow, glad the water worked :)

Heard HiPP is amazing! Loads of people rave about it :) x

I am another raver, it's cheaper than Aptamil and he never had any problems on it at all, no constipation or anything. And it's organic!

I have already bought some Aptamil ready for baby arrival but will definitely try HiPP if he has any problems with it :) xx

Just stay away from the ready milk my lb got hooked on that then didn't want to go back to powder, it's a genuine financial nightmare.. Never mind when it's sold out everywhere and you can't find it, doesn't sell abroad.. But Hipp itself it fab, we was on sma with constipation and I found the milk much lighter in general.

I used Aptamil with daughter - a mixture of both ready made and powder and she happily drank both fine, think they tasted identical though. Maybe the Hipp ready to use stuff is sweeter than the powder version or something? x

I can't say I noticed the same problem with HiPP powder vs cartons, Riley would often go away for full weekends at a time with my mom, usually camping, so she used ready made a lot and he switched between both with no probs. Different things for different kids though, it would be boring world if they were all the same :)
