Help! Mucky iron

I rarely iron and so to be asking a question about one is unusual enough, but I ironed some new black trousers and they left a big black splodge of stuff on the iron, which has gone hard since the iron cooled, how do I get it off

According to my MIL - who is a cleaning freak - she says to rub some salt & lemon mixture on it - and it should come off then just clean it with water to get the lemon residue off the iron

Ive done something similar before, I used a metal scourer to clean it while it was still hot. I suppose you could try and re-heat it on a low setting then carefully clean it off
