Just had a letter from the doctors to say that they have changed my first midwife appointment

It was originally made for the 3rd week of May and i will be about 9 weeks, they tried to change it to the following week but the only day i can make (due to working away) doesn't work with the midwife ...... so its being pushed even further back - and i will be 11 weeks by then

Is that ok? It doesn't feel right leaving it another 5 weeks till i see anyone and surely i'll be very close to my first scan by then. However it seems thats the only date we can all do as at 7 and 8 weeks i am away on business

I am 25 and this will be our first child, there are so many questions i want to ask and so much i need to be told

What do you think ?

 don't worry. I didn't see the midwife until 11 weeks- there's not much they can do til then TBH.

Any questions- just ask on here and I'm sure you'll get your answer!

I've been told not to expect a midwife appointment until between 10 and 12 weeks.

thanks, the only thing i am a little worried about is that the month before i got my BFP, i was really tired and was prescribed AB's for what the doc thought was a virus.

My AF arrived 3 days late and so i took a HPT 2 days after it was due, which was negative. AF then arrived but really very faint rather than the full on AF i usually get - then on holiday i was really quite ill, headaches, sick, etc.

Ive developed a bit of a belly aswell and wondered where that had come from

Do you think i could be 9 weeks already instead of 5 ? If so my first appointment would be at 15 weeks ?

 Have you got your scan date booked?

If you have don't worry too much- there's not much you can do in 1st tri except take folic acid and keep healthy.

Make sure you have your bloods done around now though so they can check your blood type, rubella immunity and HIV/Syphillis (although I'm sure you don't have them!)

Ditto what the others have said. Booking in appointment is pretty routine and tbh there isn't much else to be done.

Bloods are taken around 12 weeks to test for various things, I had mine done at 12+4, after my dating/Nuchal scan at 11+5.

There really isn't anything else to be done and your 16 week MW appointment will be pretty routine also (well they all are usually so  )

TBH also I found reading here and buying a decent book worked better than asking MW. They give you an info pack at booking with loads of leaflets anda booklet about your pregnancy. A lot of it is common sense in pregnancy, other things you cannot even imagine happening so would never even dream of asking your MW  They simply happen and a quick ask or read here gets you up to speed

Invest in What To Expect When Your Expecting and you'll find loads of your pregnancy questions answered in there and it breaks down each month for you also. Well worth the £10 for it I reckon.

But honestly, don't panic that you don't know stuff  This forum is very helpful and you'll soon get to grips with things.

Sherlock, can you tell me the name of the author for that book because I've found that title with two different authors?

Sorry for jumping into your thread Naterjack.

Make sure you get the revised version- the newest one is with Arlene Eisenberg

Well the one I bought was by Heidi Murkoff dated 10th April 2008.

I went to my GP today to see if I can get a blood test to confirm my pregnancy and he said that they don't do one! I originally had 2 BPN's 4 days after AF was due and then a BFP 6 days later. I just thought the GP might like to confirm things.

Also, I phoned the hospital to book a midwife appt and they told me it will be when I'm 10 weeks but I am away for that week and the following monday (the only day they seem to do these appts) is the end of May bank holiday so it will have to be booked for early June, only the consultant is changing his clinic days so they can't even book this yet! It will mean that I am 12 weeks before I even see someone and I am stressing a little as this is my first PG and I really don't know what to do now.

... sorry for the rant and for highjacking the original post.

Don't panic. Many GP's don't test again and are happy to take you are your word.

TBH there is nothing much they do before then anyways pregnancy wise. Booking in is usaully done from 8 weeks onwards, but its mostly paperwork then anyways. At your first appointment they will probably take bloods, check BP, weight, dip urine and sort out the paperwork.

Best thing you can do is relax, enjoy first tri, take folic acid, listen to your body when it needs sleep and don't fret.

If you experience any severe cramps/pains that don't go away, or have bleeding (as opposed to spotting which is very common in first tri) then go get checked out by your GP who can refer you.

If you have any concerns before your 12 week appointment nip in and see your GP and I am sure they will be able to help.

Plus this forum has lots of people happy to try to help you through the coming weeks and months :) You are not alone

Thank you Sherlock. I'm so glad I joined this forum as it will save me from a lot of worry as everyone is going through similar things. I appreciate all words of wisdom as I have never been through a pregnancy before and plan not to tell anyone (my hubby obviously knows) about my pregnancy until I am 12 weeks or so, which in turn makes it difficult as all I have to consult are you ladies.

Natterjack, I can really relate to how you feel right now!
