I was having a relatively comfortable pregnancy up until a couple of weeks ago when my sciatica set off. I wasn't too worried cause I've had it before so just went on my merry way trying to keep mobile.

It was easing off until last night when all of a sudden, I just couldn't get comfortable is any position. I went to bed, i've been crying out every time I try to roll over. Then, when I went to get up to go to the loo I just couldn't move without severe pain in my back.

I've been sobbing in bed for the past 2 hours, I genuinely can't move without pain. I am thinking this is no longer sciatic but is prob SPD. The thing is, I don't know what to do. OH is obvs concerned cause I'm in so much pain and is saying he will take me to A&E, I feel like that's a waste as its neither an accident or emergency. I can't see what they will be able to do NOW to stop the pain. I don't know if this is a midwife thing or a gp thing and again can't see how they will be able to stop the pain now either!

What am I best doing cause I'm in so much pain x

If you can get up or OH is there get into the bath the warm may help your muscles contract & give you some relief for a little while until you decide what to do.

I know we can take paracetamol but unsure about you personally if you want too.

Give your midwife a call she will advise best what pain relief & action to take.

Panicking won't help either hun because the muscles will tighten.. xx

Thanks

I'm terrified that if I get in the bath I wont be able to get out again, even with OH's help!

Trying not to panic but I've never been this immobile before and it feels like there is no end in sight for the pain!

Oh bless ya!!

I slipped in the bath a few years ago & caught the tap in my lower back triggering my sciatic nerve, fell down legs out straight & thought I was paralysed.. Wasn't until my friend gave me the most painful massage ever that the pain started to go away so I know the worry & frustration when something like your sciatic nerve goes :( you will be fine though & baby will be fine just call your midwife & explain. Ask what you can do & can take & if you can try get into the bath or let OH gently massage the area.

It will hurt but it's in spasm & that will help xx

Ouch! That sounds really painful!

Ahhh, the thought of lying on my front having a massage! Its so frustrating, I know lying on my front would be the most comfortable..if there wasn't a baby stuck to my tummy.

We have opted for a warm hot water bottle on my back, its easing it slightly!

What time can I harass my midwife at?

If it's SPD, your GP can prescribe something stronger than paracetamol. I've been given codeine to be taken only as and when it's horrendous. I've used it once and ohh my god, it worked wonders.

Also, if it's SPD - a pelvic belt might help. I'd contact my MW or GP for a referral to physio, they also sometimes have methods to ease the pain.

Thanks guys,

Its good to kno that I may be able to get pain killers that actually work! I was concerned there was nothing to help with the immediate pain!

I've got a docs appointment at 10.40 so hopefully will get some relief!

Will a physio referral be quick while I'm pregnant? I can't bear the thought of this lasting the next 6-8 weeks!

Just read that back and it sounds like a massive winge!

I got a call the following day, they booked me in for 2 weeks following which was Tuesday just gone. GP said it could be 4-6 weeks so I was surprised. It's worth a shot hun!

Well, the doctor doesn't think its SPD as the pain isn't starting at my hips - he thinks its just sciatica. Which is good I guess but doesn't really help me. He was adamant he wasn't going to prescribe me anything so its just paracetamol for now.

I cried at that point, thought brilliant could have done that on my own. He promised me a physio referral though.

Thanks for the replies guys, has helped a lot!
