I have to go for a glucose test on the 29th of this month, and its because im bigger the nmy dates (have already moaned about it in previous threads). But was speaking to the lady who took my bloods this morning and she told me she had pregnancy diabetes and didnt know it as was discovered through a glucose test.
So im going to have it done just to make sure.But have just read thriugha site and think it could be possible becasue the symptons are increased eating and drinking and i have definitely had that thius week and its not just a attck of the munchies either.

So im worried now, well only a bit but scared to death of havin a large baby and having intervention!

Yes i know im probably just reading into it a bit too much as alwasy!

Anyone else know anyone thats had it or had it themselves?

Anyone at all im dying to know whats what with this whole diabetes thing

Hiya

Im a type 2 diabetes was tablet controlled but now unfortunatly its insulin controlled .

Gestational diabetes is the same as any other type of diabetes the only diffrence been gestational diabetes goes away after the baby is born .

There is a small chance though it could stay but there is only a small percentage.

I too had the same signs as yourself

* Increase in eating
* Increase in drinking
* More visits to the toilet then a non diabetic person has .
* Increase of tiredness
* Irritability

Before the pregnancy i was put on a tablet called metformin which had to be taken twice a day which control you blood sugar levels .

As soon as i fell pregnant with my lil princess they took me straight off the metformin as it was too dangerous for the baby and put me on insulin.

Depending on how your body reacts to the insuiln there is diffrent kind of measurement they could give you .

Mine been

Before breakfast i have to have 38 units of insulin which is fast acting as my sugar levels take a long time to come down after a meal.

Before dinner i have to have 20 units of insulin again fast acting .

Before tea i have to have 40 units of insulin again fast acting

And before bed i have to have 38 units of insulin to bring my sugars down before my breakfast .

Its very easy to do and its painless if you have to go down the insulin route .

I wouldnt really call it a needle as it dont look like one its looks more like a pen.

They might try you on diet controlled first but that sadly wouldnt work with me .

You will be told to record your reading with a blood glucose meter which cost very little .

You may get told to go to more anenatal appointment and more scans to moniter babys growth .

At the antenatal clinic they will go through you insulin with you cause it might have to be increased as the weeks go by (mine does) .

They will check your urine and take regular blood samples off you and check them too .

The baby will be brought into the world sooner too depending on the size i do know that they tend not to let you go to full term due to risk .

Risks been shoulder dystocia and brachial plexus trauma .

Also depending on the size of the baby you might not beable to have natural labour it might have to be a c section.

Try not to worry too much and if theres anymore question feel free to pm me .

Wow thanks so much wend!that is info i needed to hear, of course i hope not to have diabetes, but hearing it like that has put it into perspective and is not as bad as i thought.
Reading the internet on diabetes is a scary thing!Makes everything worse then it seems

glad it help everything you read on the internet isnt true but like you said its better to know off people who have had it or know people who have had it.

i had 2 gtt test when i was pg with hannah and both came bk fine but hannah was born at 35+5 weighing 10lb 4oz due to too much sugar so they dont always help

My DD was 10lbs 10oz and they have predicted that this baby will be even bigger :shock:
They did me a glucose tolerance test when I was 26 weeks because they suspected that might be why I'm having big babies, but nope it came back normal, so fook knows why my lil' uns are big 'uns - just one of those things I guess!

Don't worry hun :)

Your just talented at growing bit strong babies xena!

Thanks though to all that have replyed to my thread, I needed to hear thew real thing from someone who knows what there talking about.
You never know it might come back ok and ive just scoffed a bit the last week - but i cant ignore that my thirst and hungar is up for some reason.And i know that there both symptoms.
But i also knowq from experience that sometimes your fundal measurements can be big and can also even out the last weels of pregnancy.

Either way im not bothrered as long as my baby isnt suffering.

I had gestational diabetes with my second, but was ok with this one when they tested me. In many cases, with gestational diabetes, they can control with diet. It worked for me and it works for a lot of people, so dongt worry too much for the moment. If you test positive they will make you check sugar levels before and after meals and suggest a little more exercise - you know, no sitting down after lunch - its off for a lovely walk! :roll:
As far as the birth, it could be quite normal, the only thing is that it is often a little early, and also they worry about hipothermia in the baby. Nothing serious with good control from the team following your pregnancy, midwife and consultant. Babies do tend to be bigger, but once you are on the diet, they are very aware and take care to pay attention to the growth of the baby. To give you an idea, my son was born at 38 weeks, four days and weighed in at 3'300 grs, which i think is about seven and a half pounds.
I feel for you, as i know how worrying it is - have a hug or two, and try not to worry ... :hug: :hug: :hug:

Trying not too, but wont know till 29th june either, which isnt till next friday!
Will just have to watch my diet, but i dont think ive been eating rubbish as such though, dont eat choccie bars all day. We eat lots of good nutrious food here at the MIL house.

Shall see though, just hoping im not so i can have the lovely non intervention active birth im hoping for. I think thats my secret fear, that i wont be able to experience the birth i want again and come down with PND again.
Its been a wonderful pregnancy and I hope nothing spoils it.

Hey Mrs_tommo!

I am going to my GTT tomorrow, I am not allowed anything to eat or drink after 11pm tonight (except water), I have to be at the hospital for 8.45am and then apparently they give you a blood test, make you drink some glucose, and then give you another blood test 2 and half hours later. Then I am allowed to eat again!

They are testing me because my mother, uncle and brother are all diabetic - so I automatically get a test.
Last weeks measurments shows that baby is a little on the big side, but not much. So we will see.......

Good luck for your test, I'll let you know what its like! :hug:
