Hi girls!

Would anybody like to tell me what happened at their first doctors appointment. I haven't been to a doctor yet - I just found got my BFP this week and have appointment for nxt week! I thought the GP was just a way to be put in touch with a midwife and OB doctor but I guess there is more to it than that.

How often should I expect to have appointments? When will I get my first scan. I thought it would be at 10 - 12 weeks. But I read about a few peope on here who mentioned internal scans during early pregnancy. I never knew about these. I'm sure doctor will explain all when I see him next week but just wondering about other peoples experiences.

A x

I was one of those people that had an internal scan, but then my first appointment was when I had just turned 8 weeks and so it was much too early for a normal ultrasound. Also, since I was due for my pap smear, they went ahead and handled that as well. Was a nice thorough visit! Oh! And had some blood work done as well.

Aside from that, it started out as I predict all future visits will be - had to be weighed, blood pressure was taken, and had to give a urine sample.

Back to the scan! While the internal scan is slightly awkward, it's 100% worth it to see your little bean :) Just don't be like me and be so in shock that you forget to ask any questions! They provided me with a picture of the scan, but I completely neglected to find out which part was the head, which was the rump..and just what I was seeing in general. I'm bringing my husband with me next time, so he can ask the questions in case I go blank again ;)

Congratulations on your BFP! My first docs appointment was a bit of a non-entity. We filled in a form for the notification to midwife, I got weighed and my blood pressure taken. Got given a maternity exemption form (so I don't have to pay for prescriptions, dental treatment etc) and that was pretty much that. Oh, and she gave me a form to take to the hospital to get my blood taken.

I think that scans depend on where you live. Where I live you don't get a scan until 11-13 weeks unless something is suspected to be wrong. Hope this is some help...probably not, just me rambling!!!xx

Yeah basically my GP just told me to ring to make an appt with the midwife, and I didnt see her until I was 10 weeks - basically they pretty much like to leave you to it until you're 12 weeks. I think people get early scans if they have had some problems such as bleeding, but otherwise they'll wait till you're around 12 weeks. I think service does vary depending on where you live but my experience is initial midwife appt, then 12 week scan, then blood test at 15/16 weeks for downs screening, then 20 week scan, then that's about it till later pregnancy. Congrats anyway - I think alot of us have found that we get a lot mor support her than we do from our midwives!! xx

i didnt have to do anything at all at my first appointment, the doctor gave me advice on what to eat, not drinking etc and sent me off with some folic acid to start taking. I didnt get any checks or anything until i saw the midwife x

That was pretty much the same for me too. My GP didn't bother doing a pregnancy test because I had done 4!!!! And one of them was a CB digi. Most people don't get an early scan, it's normally only if there's been any problems and to check that all is ok. I did get to book my appointment with the midwife on the first GP appointment but I know it all differs depending on where you are in the country.

Congrats on your BFP!!!! Wishing you a very healthy and happy 9 months!

Thank you for sharing ladies,

I guess it all depends on where you live, your doctor and individual circumstances.

I will wait to see how Thursday goes and might post an update if anything interesting.

Thanx again x
