Dear everyone,
I just moved to UK with my husband, together we recently decided to have a child but the healthcare system here is very different than in our country (France)
I don't know exactly where to go once I get pregnant. Are you followed by a GP or a Gynecologist ? Can you choose the gynecologist ?
For example if i was in France, id go straight to see a gynecologist and being followed by this same person, and I can choose my doctor.
Please explain to me how it works here , i'm a bit lost still

I went to my doctor first, you then have to make an appointment with a midwife and you are seen by that midwife throughout your pregnancy. I think you only have consultant care if you have health issues or any previous pregnancy issues?
Someone correct me if I'm wrong :)

Sadly I have not been pregnant so cant be certain but I think JulyBug is right. Where have you moved to over here? Your English is excellent, I just felt that I had to mention that!

Yes, the above is correct although in some areas your GP surgery will just say you have an appointment with your midwife at around 8 weeks called your 'booking appointment' and you don't need to see the GP first. In a first pregnancy you see the midwife a lot more times than with any pregnancies after that (they assume you know what you are doing a bit more the second time I think). You will be given a scan at 12 weeks and 20 weeks. You will only have a consultant (doctor) appointment if there are any risk factors involved in you being pregnant eg very overweight, Health issues, previous pregnancy/labour complications x

Also your community midwife that you see for antenatal appointments throughout will not be the same one present at the birth.

Sorry but I did not see the same midwife more than twice.

I've seen a different midwife at each appointment too xx

Finally I took an appointment with Margarita Voronitcheva, who I found on Findoc. As she speaks French and she follows me regularly. Thank you so much for your help all !!!

I have the same midwife and, as I'm giving birth at home, she should stay with me for my labour also :-)
