Epidural

That is fascinating Carnat - I def think there is a link. Also you tend to panic of the unknown, which makes the pain worse & an epi is then needed. The more you can relax, the more in control of everything you are. I coped really well until the transition then it was too late for pain relief anyway, but the contractions were manageable until then. The pushing then seems to take your mind off the pain, thankfully! Well it did in my experience! xx

I have to have one. Due to high BMI. Xxx

really? my bmi is 44 and im not having one and dont need it. tried to have one last time but at 9cm dialated i couldnt stay still in the correct position and got thru labour fine without it on just gas so im just having gas this time. oone has told me i have to have an epidural lol, its not even been suggested. the only thing thats been said is it can be more difficult to do on us larger ladies so to ask for it sooner rather than later if i did want one

Yea hun you dont have to have one due to BMI dont let them bully you into something x my BMI is 35 and im having a water birth :) cant have an epidural due to having funny blood something to do with platelets etc xx

My BMI is over 40 and I've not been told to have one x

I didn't realise you had to have one if you we're over a certain BMI? X

I dont think you do hun x I know there are higher risks with having a high BMI but they shouldnt say you defo need this & that as its all your choice at the end of the day x you should never be made to do something you are not 100% sure of. Us bigger ladies can get a hard time during pregnancy I have been really lucky but I know some care trusts are really shittyabout it xx

yeah my midwives and local teams have been fab in both my pregnancies, noones made me feel like a fat waste or that ive done anything wrong just by being big, theyre really posistive and encouraging. i had my last baby naturally with no assistance and no epidural just gas and me pushing, episiotomy when they realised she was a big girl and back to back. my bmi was 41 by then and has gone to 44 during this preg, again a big baby predicted from scans and noone has said anything but positive things about how i can do it i did it last time etc

They have recommended i have an epidural due to my cardiac problems but it's my choice. I hope i will be ok but happy to know it's there in case i can't cope. Only had g&a on my first but didn't have any problems either though. X

thats what i mean i think its ultimately the womans choice at the end of it, the can recommend what they think is best but cant dictate xx Do your research Twinkle hun and make sure you are 100% comfortable dont be bullied into something you dont want xx

It always makes me feel better when ladies have an epidural as i have to have a spinal one with my sections and can never feel my body from halfway down boobs/ arms and lower ,other than tugging, then i think well most get the choice if time allows so im not really cheeting then!

Do you labouring ladies that have epidural , have a catheter too? How does that work with all that pushing?

JJ mum i was told i would still feel when i need to go toilet but one of my friends wet herself. said she couldnt feel a thing. so i'm not sure ho that will work ? x

My epidural was the best thing since sliced bread I went in very open minded if I could have done it without I would but after 4 days of labour and baby back to back it really was a god send. I could still tell on my own when contractions were coming I could tell my belly was going tight but the pain wasn't there especially the pain in my back. It is a little strange afterwards not being able to get up and about but I gave birth fairlykate in the eevening so by the time I was sorted and moved to ward it was late so I went to sleep and when I woke all feeling had returned. Jj I had a catheter no idea when it got put in but remember it being taken out the next morning x

Although I've had 3 c secs, I laboured with my first baby. Really long labour that resulted in an emergency c sec - I did have an epidural and for pain relief they are amazing. I do think it slowed down my labour though and caused issues. I wish now I would have held off for longer. I didn't actually ask, I was offered and I just took it!

I did have a catheter with the epidural - that was the least of my worries and I didn't feel anything anyway really. Except an overwhelming urge to go to the toilet!

I've obviously had spinals with the subsequent sections and I actually prefer spinals to epidurals. They are meant to be less risky too but they can't top them up at all like with an epidural. I find my spinal always wears off fairly soon and catheter is out as soon as I'm up and mobile.

I didn't want an epidural but I was open minded to pain relief. Just went with it and waited to see how I felt. X

Having an epidural was the best thing for me. Been in back pain for 4 days, contractions were agony but still in really bad pain in between. Had epidural - 2 hrs later lo heart rate dropped and off for emergency section. If I didn't have the epi in I would have had to have a ga as they needed him out ASAP.

I LOVED my epidural! After a horrendous first birth which went on for days and the anesthetist not being able to come to do my epi, I ended up with ventouse delivery and lots of nightmares. This time around I was really anxious about the pain so definitely wanted an epi! Being second baby it went a lot quicker and I was worried I would miss the opportunity to have it, but after begging from the moment I was there, I had the most amazing next couple of hours where I was in charge and not a screaming mess. I only had enough to keep contractions at bay do could still feel all my legs and all the pressure on my women's bits. I could push fine, and midwife said it only slowed me down by about an hour. I still felt all the 'ring if fire' as baby's Head was coming out, but chose to be able to not have massive dose so that I could push him out myself and still felt EVERYTHING apart from contractions. That was still horrendous obviously, but that 2 hour break was the best. Was able to get up and about straight after and baby was fine xxxx

Best thing in the world I loved my epidural. I have a high BMI and wasn't told I have to have one. In fact they worry about getting it in if there is too much flab around the back, and getting it in.
