I am severely constipated! I always am while im pregnant, last time i used to take lactulose solution, this time i complained to the Dr that I hate the taste, she told me the best to take is normacol plus! she asked how often do i go i said almost every 3 days! so she suggested taking to dosage one morn and one even. so first day it worked great. now I can hardly go!! I do drink plenty of water as it does say so in the instruction. i stopped since yesterday as it is doing an adverse reaction now.. what shall i do i feel loaded and it makes me feel sick!! i really feel terrible! shall i go back to lactulose!?? is it safe to use glycerin suppository?

get loads of fibre in you and orange juice, that seems to help me, hope it gets better soon hun x

I think reallyoldmum suggested plums to serendipity? I think it was ?

I also heard prunes help :D

i would check with your gp
but i just took any tablet form of laxative when pregnant with jack
my gp told me it was safe

thanx everyone.. prunes and plums never work for me :( the only thing that works is All Bran but unfortunately I feel like :puke: if i have it now.

in the take a break this week it was 5 things for constipation in pregnancy!

1 eat lots of fibre rich food and fruit and vegetables

2. snack on high roughage prunes or drink prune juice.

3. make sure you stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water

4. do some gently daily exercise such as walking or swimming

5. consult your gp before taking any laxitives as not all are safe for mums to be.

Thanx Hollyhobby,
I will try and follow these advices but it's really difficult to eat anything with fiber! I don't know what my problem is but I will take lactulose as i know it's safe and after that i will try and implement and high fiber diet!

How much water do you drink in general? so many people dont take their suggested amounts a day (4 pints. 2.5 litres) and it really will help to get rid of constipation natually. It keeps the stools soft as well.

I find that grapefruit juice really helps for me it's a natural laxative anyway but doesn't give you as much gas as prunes etc. try pink grapefruit juice though as the yellow stuff is very bitter and has made my MS worse especially if i drink it in the morning. I just eat weetabix in the am followed by a ham sandwich on dry wholemeal bread for fibre and protein, works a treat along with sipping the juice all day. I water mine down a bit as it's a bit strong, my tastebuds seem to be on overdrive!
hope this helps

I was taking lactulose for a number of weeks, and still like to keep some in stock just in case, but since having regular reflexology sessions the constipation is much better......maybe worth a try (its also supposed to shorten labour).

thanx all,
EllieBelle - Refelexology is great but it should be done by a really experienced person while pregnant! why? as u suggested it shortens labour and triggers it as well. I was adviced not to try it until i am over 37 weeks. but i guess if i had an experienced reflexologist I shouldn't worry as they know what to do..
any way I've taken lactulose yesterday and I will have some today. it didn't work well! sometimes it takes few days to work for me.

mrs-tommo - I don't think I am drinking 2.5 lit a day! I think I should try and do that. I really hate this symptom in pregnancy and the problem the natural things like prunes, grapefruit..etc doesn't work for me!

Absolutely you need to be careful but I was told by my midwife I could have reflexology, preferably after 12 weeks (I started it earlier but that was my choice), and to be honest have been having reflexology for over 10 years on and off......for the last 2 months I have been having weekly sessions and will do now until I go into labour. My current reflexologist specialises in pregnancy which makes a big difference.

I always find it takes a good 48 hours for the lactulose to kick in, but once it does it works quite well.....its just that horrid sweet sickly taste that takes some getting used to :puke:

I love your username by the way - the Maldives is possibly my favourite place on earth!!! :D

Hope the problem gets better soon
