my Dh and I were planning to take Maheen to the swimming-pool tonight, thinking there would be less people after 6:00pm, but last night, I was thinking is it really safe for my little girl to go in the local swimming-pool if she has a bit of eczema?

what do you think? should I avoid it?

I would ask either your Dr or your HV. :D

thanks Beanie.

I have called the HV office, but there is no one, and even though they say they 'll call me back on the answering machine, my experience tells me they might not early enough!

so that's why I thought I would ask on here...maybe someone has been through the same experience!

Thanks for your reply on the other thread as well, I think maheen will sleep in vest only tonight, then!

Hi mel,

alex has itchy inflammed patches on his chest and back which they have yet to decide if its ecxema or not (still not found a cream that works 100%).

we take him swimming once a week and it doesnt seem to have any effect on his rash at all. my hv knows we swim and obviously knows about his skin and although i have never asked directly she has never said its not good to take him.

i know every baby is different and it may not be the smae skin problem but thought it might help!

have fun if you do go - al loves it :D

i used to suffer rom excema but mine was terrible in fact i was addmitted into hospital on anumber of occasions, i wasnt aloud swimming, but if it is mild im sure u should be fine to take her, as i go now an i still get the odd bit but not as bad!
Not much help really am i

thanks girls,

No, don't think youy are not helping, it's always good to know similar situations

Well, the HV has not called back yet, so I think we are going to give it a go!
With this weather, i really want to go!

mel, it should be fine! i take ruben and he has very dry skin and excema too. before i take him in the pool i cover him in vaseline which acts as a barrier, and although it makes him slippery his skin has never got worse after swimming. one thing i do is i have cut right down on the baths he has, he now only goes swimming on a wednesday, then a bath that evening before bed, then he has another bath sunday evenings - it's helped his skin a lot! also i recommend DermaCare from vaseline intensive care. it is an adult body lotion for sensitive and dry skin and REALLY works for ruben!

Thanks Petchy,

I will do that next time!
The Hv finally called and advised to put aqueous cream on her, o protect her skin, so we went, and that's what we did!

It worked well, and we had a great time!
Maheen even put her head under water (well, not fully, just above the eyes!!!) I am so proud of her, she did not cry, she was fine from the beginning to the end! and she even tried to swim, with her little legs and arms!

I am going to buy the cream you recommended, till now, I have used Aveeno, which is quite good...it's done good till now, but it does not clear up completely!

Thanks again!

Mel has eczema and we have some emollient cream from the Drs for it. The first time I went to our waterbabies classes he was so slippery he was like an eel and I was too frightened to let him float very much in case I couldn't grab him fast enough. Since then I have not covered him in it beforehand but have showered him afterwards and put it on then and this seems to be fine for his skin. I've been using the Juinor Oilatum bath stuff and that's really good although it's dead expensive :p.

Hi Rosebay!

Just thought I'll tell you, we also have oilatum bath stuff, but we got in on prescription from GP!!! They don't like prescribing it , only if it is to sort eczema out! so, it might be worth trying to ask your GP about it!
as you say, it is VERY expensive!
We use it for every bath!
