AM I RIGHT IN THINKING THAT A SWEEP IS BASICALY THE MW PUTTING HER FINGERS INSIDE AND GIVING EVERYTHING A BIT OF A "MOVE ABOUT"? IF THAT IS THE CASE COULD WE NOT DO OUR OWN?? :?

Only if you have go go gadget arms  I cant even get round to wipe my fanny after a wee/prune my bush let alone go ferriting up there!!!

Hiya,,,, no idea if you can do it on your own but i didn't know the details of a sweep - so i googled it!!

"Membrane sweeping is done by your midwife or doctor. While internally examining you, he or she will simply "sweep" a finger around the neck of your womb (cervix). The aim is to separate the membranes around your baby from your cervix. This releases hormones called prostaglandins, which may kick-start your labour.

A membrane sweep increases the likelihood that labour will start within 48 hours. It has a higher chance of working if the neck of your womb is already softening and preparing for labour. It does not increase the risk of infection to either you or your baby.

A membrane sweep can be uncomfortable as the neck of the womb is often difficult to reach before labour begins and there may be some slight "spotting" of blood and irregular contractions immediately afterwards"

This is what I found! Physically doing it yourself though...................GOOD LUCK!!! doing my own bikini wax is hard!

Eww Id rather not have a fiddle of me own cervix thanks :talkhand:

Mind you I couldnt reach to scratch my foof if I had an itch at the moment, never mind delving into the abyss

Haha - it's a bit of a stretch getting to your own cervix but it can be reached yourself, not sure about the sweep part though since it's separating the membranes inside your womb, your OH might be able to :rotfl:

MMMM INTERESTING - I JUST THINK IF I COULD DO MY OWN ONE IN MY OWN TIME AT HOME CALMLY - IT MAY BE BETTER THAN THE MW DOING IT IN THE CLINIC WITH THEM HORRIBLE GLOVES ON LOL! WELL IF BABY DOES NOT ARRIVE BY MON I CAN ASK FOR A SWEEP THEN. I WILL ASK THE MW IF YOU CAN DO YOUR OWN ONE AND SEE WHAT SHE SAYS??? SHE WILL PROB THINK I AM OFF MY HEAD! LOL :wall:

Isn't this sort of what sex is supposed to do? I know in the later stages of my pregnancies, I had achy pains after sex and my 2 spontaneous labours happened the day after a bouncy session! Think the sperm has stuff in it similar to pessaries too. Hope I'm right!

I can barely reach my fanjita after the bathroom to wipe let alone go on a one woman mining mission up there!

And I wouldnt know what my cervix was if it came up and bit me on the ass......think I would leave the foof irrigation to the pros.....

:rotfl: Have got an image in my head of me trying do that and falling straight on my head.

When are you alowed to ask for a sweep?

xx

Oh the images in my mind... :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I can't reach anymore so I've got no chance! Think I'd rather leave it to the professionals though, don't really fancy having a feel of my cervix! :puke:

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
ive just spat all over my laptop & woke up my OH whos in bed poorly by laughing out loud at the answers to this thread! They so hit home... not being able to wipe, shave etc
I swear ive just pulled muscles ive laughed that hard :rotfl:
Thank you ladies.

personally - I would advise against it! Midwives check the babies heartbeat before and after doing a sweep and they check the position of your baby to make sure its head is well down because say for example you accidently put your finger through the membrane and babies head wasnt right down, there is a risk of the cord prolapsing. It can also be distressing for the baby.

I swear by the time ive had this one i will be able to get a broom up there and give it a proper sweep, :rotfl: i sure the only reason my hubby says im fine is he is soo well endowed

:rotfl: :rotfl: gone are the days when I could reach my own cervix. I can still just about shave and wipe but that luxury is fast dissapearing!! I'm going to have to start drip drying soon!

Personally I agree with Ellie G and would let the MW do it in case something didn't go quite to plan

...after reading this I'm a little confused...if a membrane sweeping isn't a good idea to do at home, would your partner fingering you carry the same risks? Even though they say sexual activities are perfectly safe to do....confused lol

I don't think he would finger your cervix though its quite high he would have to be forcing his way, with mine the MW couldn't reach once so I doubt id have been able to myself. xx
