Just wondering...

Last week, I was told by the midwife that I had to collect a prescription. It was for iron tablets, but I was also prescribed test sticks that I have to dip into my wee once a week from 26wks to test for protein.

I had never heard of anyone having to do this, and was wondering if any of you have been asked to do this? Or know why I have been asked to do it?
Thanks x

Hm. 'fraid not, hun. I'm sure it probably varies for different areas. They test for protein at every MW appointment that we have here, but they are only every four weeks until later on. Sorry. Didn't want to read and run.
xx

I've not heard of this either, but as Karen says, each area is different. I suppose it's a good idea though because that means if you suspect you have a uti, you don't need to wait for app to find out xx

No, everytime I have a GP, midwife or hospital appointment/scan though I have to bring a sample with me and they test it there! Although there is protein amongst other things in my urine and they won't do anything cos there's no infection :( xxxx

my docs/ midwife go mad at me because i work at a hospital and test my own at work now and again! maybe its a routine thing in your area x

They test for protein as it can indicate high blood pressure in pregnancy which can lead to pre-eclampsia. I don't know of anyone else who has had to do their own but it's a good idea to get us pregnant women involved in our care! I test mine at work fairly frequently, being a nurse, and also test my blood sugar occasionally. I think it's good to have a part to play :) x
P.S. Protein can also indicate a urine infection but you need bigger dipsticks with other indicators on to assess that more accurately so I'm pretty sure your dipsticks are checking for high BP

Not heard of this before either sorry. I know they check for protein in trimester 3 because it can be a sign of pre eclampsia, are you known to be high risk of developing this? As far as im aware being iron deficiant does not increase your chances of developing pre eclampsia, so cant see the two being related. Chances are you just have an extra cautious midwife, although it would be helpful if they explained to you exactly what level of protein you should be concerned about, as traces of it in urine is nothing to be concerned about. I would give your midwife a wee phone or ask at your next appointment just to clarify the reasons behind it.

Ok cool thanks everyone. Must be just instead of them testing it every time, they gave me a pee cup too lol.
I go for a scan on 3rd April so will ask then to make sure.
Thanks girls :) x

Happyred - I've never got this far in a pregnancy before so never had pre-eclampsia.
The dip sticks tell u whether ur urine has no protein, trace, low, medium and high and it says on the box to contact them if I ever get a reading of more than trace amounts.

I'm not overly worried tbh as I know I'm healthy and haven't had any complications. Was just wondering if I'm the only one self testing :) x
