Just wondering why some people have their check-ups etc with their doctor and some people have them with their midwife?
When i first became pregnant i always assumed i would have check-ups with my doctor throughout the whole thing and then a midwife when i gave birth.
But when i first phoned my doctor to tell them i was pregnant and what to do next, they gave me the phone number for my local clinic to see the midwife....and i never saw the doctor even once!
Im now about 28 weeks and my midwife only does appointments at the clinic on thursday mornings im just wondering if i ever needed to could i have an antenatal check-up with my doctor or do i always have to see the midwife? Am quite confused
Does everyone else see a midwife for their regular check-ups or do you see your doctor?

Not seen doctor once...all midwife and then i had to see consultant at hospital as my BP is high, but nope, no doctor...shame cos he's lovely!!! :rotfl:

I've seen the midwife the whole way through bar twice. The first was the consultant OB (because I had a low lying placenta and she needed to basically "sign off" when it was clear of my cervix). The other time was at 36 weeks where I was told by the midwife to make an appointment to check in with my GP instead of seeing them (it also says this on my notes). GP just did exactly the same as the midwives do so wasn't too sure of the point in that!

I have seen the midwife the majority of the time during my pregnancy. I think i have seen the Doctor about 3 times. I was told at the booking appointment with my midwife that i would have shared care between the doc and midwife.

Not sure of the point of it as they both do the same things at each appointment

MW all the way is normal. Your GP tends to not get involved in the pregnancy side of things.

I only saw a Doctor today (Obstetrics not a normal GP) as I had my 34 week scan etc and needed to discuss the results and be signed off. So whenever I talk about a doctors appointment during pregnancy I am meaning a specialist in the field, not a general GP. Of course I'll go see my GP for non PG related matters still.

I've seen only a midwife all the way through. I've always thought the midwives would be more knowledgable on the subject than GP's as they specialise in pregnancy

I've seen MW most of the time and GP only a few times. My experience with midwifes has been far better than with GPs. Midwifes see pregnant women every day when as GPs are generalists and don't seem to know as much.

I saw GP last week and she wasn't able to tell me if the baby was engaged (in my previous visit the midwife had told me that the baby had started engaging). Not to mention that she hurt my pubic bone and said: "that's pretty fast" when listening to the baby's heartbeat (without saying what that meant).

At this late stage in pregancy I prefer to be seen by people who know what they are doing. I should be seeing GP during my 40 week appointment (if I haven't popped) but I am going to request to see a midwife instead.

So totally agree with Muppetmummy...

I have seen the midwife most of the time - apart from twice. Once I was told to make a doctors appointment but it was supposed to be the midwife and the other week as the midwife was fully booked.

i've seen the GP once before and then i am supposed to see them at 33 weeks (according to my notes) what really bugged me as the doc asking why i was there last time and telling me it wasn't necessary, when my midwife had told me to book it! grr

i saw my GP when i got my BFP. I asked hm if he was gonna do a test and he said no because "the bloke in the lab will only open a packet of clear blue" :rotfl: so i was like, fair enough!! (Dont really know why we had to see him tbh)

Then had to see him at 16 weeks which for some reason is routine round here. Again, dont know why cos he just did all the stuff that the MW does........then saw him AGAIN at 31 weeks....just another routine check up, but MW said the gp had to do it. It was my MW that told me i had to see the GP those times, but i never knew why

I should really have asked , shouldnt i, lol
