Well, we have a history of large families on both sides.

My father's grandmother had 21 children, I kid you not. It was in the days when women submitted whenever and didn't use BC. We have a photo of her in the album at home and though she looks about sixty, she is pregnant. Also in those days in Ireland, tuberculosis was rife and a lot of their children died before their teen years.

And here's the oddest thing about that family. Twenty of those children were girls. The last child my great grandmother had was a boy! I remember him as a very old man. Imagine having 20 older sisters!
