I know you can deliver the placenta naturally or with an injection, I don't know which is better or what's advisable so what did you all do?

I had the injection...it just speeds things up i think so they could then stitch me up quick :) Be interesting to see how many people opted for natural x

I had the injection both times - just so that it was all finished quicker and i could be left alone with hubby and new baby :)

I had natural delivery of placenta, it took around 45 min to deliver.

I had intervention ie ventouse and you are more likeky to bleed with intervention so i opted for injection. I lost quite a bit of blood so was glad i had it.

Tapatalking so cant see signatures

I wanted the injection but after placenta had stopped pulsating. As things turned put they had to get placenta out very quickly to check blood gasses as it had taken me so long to deliver baby.

I had the injection too: I didn't really 'deliver' the placenta though, I give birth on my knees and the placenta basically fell out! LO was less than 2 mins old, took both midwives by surprise but I was glad it was done so I could get on with cuddling! :D

Thanks everyone, seems the injection is more favored, I just don't know if there are any complications that come with it? i really don't want to delivered it naturally because it could take long want it over and done with but don't know what's in this injection

The injection obviously isn't "natural" so the theory is it can upset the balance of hormones? Depending on what you read it can effect the babies ability to nurse and the bonding process.

However a natural third stage can lead to increased risk of haemorraging / retaining some of the placenta which is why for many years it wasn't optional in many hospitals to have a natural delivery of the placenta.

As I say for me even if I'd wanted to I couldn't have done it naturally... I don't even remember the injection but placenta came away very easily and very quickly.

I have low platelets so I think they will probably advise me against naturally and they would rather I have the injection, I just get a bit skeptical because I don't know anything about it, should probably start researching lol

I had the injection, I did want to deliver it naturally if nothing had happened within 15mins I was going to have the injection to get it out. However, I ended up with ventouse and in theatre so had to have the injection and the placenta came away quickly.

i had the injection, i originally didnt want it but after labour i just wanting the whole thing over and done with so i could get stitched up and shower, i was a right mess after blood everywhere

I delivered the placenta naturally. There is a time limit set on how long they will leave you though and then the injection will be given. I think it was 30 mins? Can't remember exactly but something like that. We waited for the cord to finish pulsating, OH cut it and then I cuddled my baby while waiting for the placenta. Only took 15 mins and 3 small pushes to get it out, as you can imagine you won't feel a thing by that point  Just the urge to push when the placenta has detached. xx

I had the injection, which I never felt. But as the mw was pulling the cord it snapped and luckily she grabbed the placenta before it went back in, else I would of been going to theatre. It had never happened to the mw before x

Opted for natural but had ventouse delivery so ended up with injection. Was out in 3 mins.

Still with the injection and a drip to stop bleeding I still lost 600 liters of blood.

You have up to 1 hour to deliver the placenta naturally. Midwife not allowed to use traction (pulling on the cord) to help it out. After the hour, if the tricks used to help it out not worked (baby to the breast, catheter to empty bladder) You will need the injection and cord traction to help the stubborn thing out. Injection is much easier and faster, but in the end it is your choice. I would say look up physiological third stage and you can see what it entails. I would decide in your birth plan not when the midwife asks when you are in labour.
