I was going to start doing a bit of decorating yesterday as we are planning to have all new carpets upstairs... Now i have spoken to a few people about the safety of this while pregnant... Some say painting is fine when pregnant.. and others (like my mother) say i shouldn't be painting... What are your opinions... should i leave it all to my husband???

teehe any excuse.. leave him to do it.. have a lay down lol..

i'd have to keep an eye on him as hes not a DIY person LOL

I think it depends on what's in the paint. Older paints used to have dodgy toxins in them which is probably why your Mum isn't keen. I wouldn't want to myself, as the smell would probably make me feel ill, but I think you're ok if everything is really well ventilated.

But, as Lisa says, any excuse to leave him to it!

I was told to use low fume paint and wear a mask when i was doing mine.

When I was pregnant with my first, I stripped and repainted my old crib... my midwife at the time said the painting was fine...as I was outside and it was well ventilated...but I should have stayed well clear of the paint stripper...no harm came to my daughter either way, but it's best to avoid paint strippers of any kind...so I have been told.

We are due to move to our new place next month and I will be doing some decorating... It has lime green walls in the living room which I can't stand and my husband will be working, so it will be bucket of paint time. I will make him do the high bits though on the step ladder.

Alternatively, if you can get away with not doing DIY (I hate it personally and I am not particulary skilled at it)...I would use the excuse of being pregnant and too tired and sick to do that level of manual labour...

:rotfl:

I decided to redecorate our spare room into a nursery 3 months before I got my BFP. This was because my hubby is useless at DIY, and to be honest I wanted to do the work myself.

All the painting, carpets, varnishing and wallpapering was done in the new year as I didn't want to take any chances while pregnant. Everything else can wait until closer to the time.

Do what ever you feel comfortable doing. Don't do too much, It is time your OH learned. xxx

Hiya,

I was doing a bit of painting on Saturday and my sister rang, she said I shouldnt be doing it, and then she phoned her friend who is an obstetrition and she confirmed it, I thought is was just older type paints with lead etc. but she said she would not risk it, with the fumes so I stopped. Hope this helps!
