Hello I'm pregnant with my first that's due 21st July I'm deciding between a home water birth or a water birth at the hospital I just want to be somewhere where I'm not stressed etc help me any advice xx

Does your hospital have a birthing centre or a midwife lead unit? I had ds2 in mlu and It Was great, not as clinical As the Hospital labour ward but had the security of being within minutes of medical help if needed x

I shall speak to my midwife I have a appt on Thursday x

one thing to consider is that if the water birth is really important to you, there is no guarentee that the pool will be available when you get to the hospital, a planned home water birth gives you more chance of actually getting one! provided you feel safe and happy at home and have no medical concerns there is no reason not to give home birth a go:) It depends a lot on how you feel about hospitals in general, if you are going to feel calmer at home go for it, you can always have an aggrement to transfer if you feel you need to, how close is your nearest hospital? The most important thing is to do it where you feel most confident, wherever that is, as this is likely to mean labour is faster, and less painful than if you are somewhere you dont feel safe, cervix's know when their owners are stressed out! Also , make sure whoever you choose as a birth partner is confident in your choice, understands your wishes and is happy to support your choices, as its better to have people with you who arn't going to be stressing about that stuff while its happeneing!

I had a HB and it was a wonderful experience. I felt a 1000x more relaxed at home than I would have been in hospital. It was a long labour and slow to progress. Contractions slowed every time I was distracted or stressed so I believe being in hospital would probably have lead to interventions or even a CS. Every one is different though so you have to decide what makes you most comfortable.

At the end of the day, no-one knows what will happen. If you have a home birth you need to be prepared to be blue lighted to hospital if things don't quite go to plan.

If at hospital you need to be prepared that the pool might not be free.

In both cases you might be asked to get out of the water anyway.

Best thing imo to avoid any disappointment is to just prepare for the fact that it might not be your perfect birth.

I wanted a home water birth with my first. Hubby wouldn't let me. As it turned out I had a lovely water birth in hospital and then a pph and fainted. So I would have been bluelighted to hospital.

Because of that I wasn't allowed a homebirth with my second.

But it would have in fact been an ideal homebirth. My Labour was so short and painful that I nearly didn't make it to hospital. I resent not having the gas and air when I needed it. I went in at 9pm and was home by 3am!

So the point I'm making is no-one knows.

It is a good point that you need to be ready for things to change. You might make plans for a HB or water birth and it not work out but if you don't make any plans you are pretty much making it impossible to have those things so it's always good to know what you want and make positive steps to make it happen but don't be too disappointed if things change.
