I'm perhaps being thick here but what's the big deal about using cotton wool on a newborn, why not a natural/sensitive wipe or one of those adorable soft ramkin sponges etc. Why do newborns seemingly 'have' to be washed/bathed with cotton wool?

I used fragrence free wipes on mine when they were new born. I did use cotton wool on the faces though for the first couple of months. Mine all needed their eyes cleaning about 6 times a day cos they had eye infections so I had to use cotton wool.

Newbporn baby's skin is all brand new and sensitive plus they're more susceptible to infections. Even gentle wipes contain chemicals and the sponges are reused so carry a risk of infection.

Cotton wool and clean water are all a newborn baby needs, after all they're not rolling in dirt or eating greasy food each day :D

there are too many chemicals in the wipes, if you think about it women use them to remove make-up so they must be fairly strong, even the sensative ones.
We only use cotton wool and water with Evie when changing her nappy and we've never had any problems such as nappy rash, whereas one of her grannys used a baby wipe on her and she got a little rash from it, so we banned them from using baby wipes  !
Basically as said before they basically dont need anything other than water to clean them as they dont actually get that dirty. :D

I never used cotton wool on DD because of me, i cant touch it it makes my teeth squeak :wall:
Any ideas on anything other than wipes? i used them on DD and she was ok, but did eventually get a little rash :(

I mix and match, sometimes wool sometimes wipes. We had an explosion earlier and I started off with cotton wool and we weren't getting anywhere and teej was getting peed off with me so we went to wipes and got it all really quickly!

I'm same as Missac, I mix & match, I give Libby some air time when changing her nappy too - especially after using wipes..no nappy rash.....yet :)

I only use wipes on her bot though, nowhere near her face or anything.

FeeFee do cotton pads effect you in the same way - they don't have that grinding thing that wool does?

Yeah, i know i know im a freak i dunno what it is i just cant stand the stuff its like nails down a black board to me :rotfl:
Think i'll just use wipes and air the botty as long as possible

I only use cotton wool once a day for a top & tail. Rest of time I use wipes. He doesnt have nappy rash, he did go quite red for a day but that was because it was hot and he had a disposable on (normally use cotton)

I also give him nappy free time so he can get air to it and let out lots of farts
