**constipation** 7 week old help please!!

That's just it water is fast flowing through the test so babies will prefer it or just get more in their tummy which then stops them being filled up with nutritional milk.. Then the cycle continues

FF babies do tend to get more constipated as formula is thicker, I don't see how an oz of water is going to kill a baby? I can understand and would agree if it was like 8oz because yes, that is a lot but a small amount of water can't be that bad?

Button Bear, I've just looked up the story you're referring to - according to some reports, baby was getting twice as much water as she was breastmilk and there were also concerns about baby's general well-being - people around the child noticed the baby was smelly and dirty, mum refused all pre- and post-natal care including vitamins, and the family were referred to the US equivalent of Social Services when baby was born.

No feeds should not be diluted down but this is an extreme case.

Personally I don't trust US medicine if not backed up by the NHS, there are too many corporations with their fingers in US medical care that are trying to make a quick buck.

No I hadn't seen the story buttonbear but after reading Kumbers post on it clearly it was a very extreme case and the parents were giving a ridiculous amount of water as well as there being other issues. Most things are toxic if given in excess.

Oh I know that was an extreme case and i think negligent really, I was just showing how something simple as water is bad etc. I wouldn't give my LO water but that's just my opinion :)

My little one is thriving on SMA. Regular poo, no constipation, no colic, reflux or sick after eating.

I back the advice to keep trying formula until you find one to suit. What suits your little one might not suit mine. So saying definitely don't try a particular brand isn't helpful IMO. You never know, SMA might be the one that works for you. Maybe not.

I'd keep trying formula or give in to medicine. The important thing is to ease your little ones distress asap.

I wouldn't give my LO water but that's just my opinion :)

I agree. Especially if they're underweight as you're filling them with water and not leaving enough space for the formula they need.

I was told only to give water if it's sweltering hot or baby has bad diarrhoea and you need to replace some of their body fluids.

When Felix had bad contipation at that age we were told to give him a tiny bit of freshly squeezen orange juice with a little boiled water, literally only an oz at most and that worked really well. Prune juice would have the same effect xo

I switched to HIPP from aptimel due to gas and constipation issues and she hasn't had a problem since!

Also kinda agree with button - 6oz sounds like a lot of water a day. But if your doctor advised it then I guess must be okay!

I was told no more than 2oz cooled boiled water in 24hrs and never ever down milk. We had so many problems with normal aptimil so went on to aptimil comfort. My little boy settled so well on that. But it's near impossible to get hold of due to a factory fire. So we went into sma comfort. And he was worse than ever. Been on hipp now for last week and so far no problems but like everyone said each baby's different so it's trial and error x

I could only get Matthieu to take a few sips of water as when he realised it was water he just screwed up his face n didnt swallow it haha wee fly man lol. A small amount of boiled water between feeds does no harm to your baby midwives recommend this to be done for constipation for years until recently! I done it for Matthieu as I wasnt going to sit n see my baby in pain because advice has now suddenly changed! I found a hot bath and some cooled boiled water helped but I actually ended up changing his formula and what a difference. He was on sma gold but I think it was too heavy for him so I switched to aptimal. If these suggestions dont work then maybe speak to the GP about lactulose.he is now pooing and farting like nobody buisness since switching to aptimal xxx

Hi everyone!

Thank you so so much for all your posts , so helpful! Sorry taken ages to reply I'm away on a short break and we have no Internet signal!!

I've taken advise and I did have a feeling the confort milk may be contributing, there's also shortage where I am with comfort milk so I bought cow and gate normal ( following your advise n others re SMA!) it's so much thinner that aptimal comfort isn't it.

After 24 hours I've had a very runny poop but I still had to help her, she was straining and pushing for hours as soon as I helped by rubbing a wipe on her bottom she started to go but only pushed after each time I helped her, by the end it was very very watery!!

I'm giving her water but she cant have much or brings it up, so little bits thru the day.

Her bottom is still turning Inside out with red swollen bits and feisures as I can see them.

Health visitor is coming Monday so I'm hoping she continues to progress!!

She does seem much more settled on this new milk and not as gripey and is still burping fine .... Xxxx

Just in regards to the water my health visitor was livid that dr told us to water down formula , she thinks because she is small so advised to water down as a way of getting extra fluids , however she feeds better than most babies as is so so hungry , so it was by all accounts very poor advise! She was hungry , luckily we only did it a day!

Health visitor advised 2-3 oz water an hour after every feed!! We tried it a day and it was too much, I knew in my head it wasn't right, she was sick and bloated I felt so bad!!!

So now I'm giving her correct powder scoops with water , and a few sips of cool boiled water throughout the day , which is around I bet 1-2oz. I will reduce this if she is pooing normally ( consistency wise!)

It's so hard getting conflicting advise, it's made me worried and am really grateful for all your advise!

I just hope she gets the hang of it soon as it genuinely is looking like to me that she cannot poo on her own, and I feel it's because she stopped growing and was delivered before 40 weeks .. Fx it's not x

Also I wanted to try hipp but it wasn't where I am! So at the risk of changing her again I'll let this settle and if no joy obv back to the drs ( for the third time!!) demanding help / tests. Then hipp formula.

I could honestly cry with this as I hate seeing her struggle , esp over something she should be doing so easily x hope all other babies with reflux / similar issues feel better soon too

She will take a few days to adapt to the new milk but the fact she is pooing and its soft not hard is maybe a good sign her stools are starting to soften with the different formula! Yeah with regards to watering down the formula that was bad advice as baby needs the calories from the milk...I hope with switching it helps her alot. Best of luck its not nice atall seeing them in discomfort but hopefully something as simple as a formula change might help xx

Some babies do just struggle to poo, a friend of mine has to coax her lg to go. It's a genetic condition but I don't know what it's called

She's just done one on her own this morning!!! After a few hours pushing, very pleased! Fx it's the start......

Kumber if u remember what it's called let me know... X thank u x

So just a quick update , the Cow and gate has worked, stools are now soft and she's going once a day , but a full nappys worth!!

We have to help her , hold her legs up n wipe her bottom but it's a huge improvement!

With time hoping that she learns she can go without pain , and it's easier instead of what she had so fingers crossed! Thank everyone.

That's with cow and gate number 1, not comfort xxx
