Hi All,
I am planning on circumsising my little boy, and wonder if any new mums have already done it, or expectant mums are planning it too?
I heard that they can perform the procedure shortly after birth, but won't be discussing it with my hospital for another 3 weeks when I have my next appointment.
Anyone give me some advice and explain the procedure and or after effects of care?
Thank you.

Hi, just curious as to why you are going for circumcision, I personally don't agree with it unless it is absolutely necessary for medical reasons.. My brother had to have it done as he had problems as a young baby, not too sure on the aftercare etc x

I agree with FM2B - I'd only do it if it was absolutely necessary for medical reasons. The men on my OH's side have all had it done apart from his Brother for medical reasons so i'm dreading them telling me my boy needs it doing! I'd never do it 'just because'! My little Brother had it done when he was 1 (again for medical reasons) and I remember him crying because of the pain! :( x

Yes I agree I would never do it unless it was for medical reasons I do not understand why anybody would do it for any other reason it must be awfully painfull for the baby.

Sorry I can't be of any help there chick, I know some people do it for religious reasons - I hope you don't mind me asking is this why? x

I probably wouldnt unless it was medically necessary x At such a young age babies are prone to infections, and thats one wound/cut that could easily get infected x

The onyl reason I'm mentioning infection is cause my mum had a friend who knew of someone that had it done when their son was born and it got infected x He ended up with septeciaemia but fortunately survived xx

I think it is more common in certain countries - for example my OH is American and he assumed that everyone had it done! I hadn't even thought about it. I told my Mum and she wasn't happy and said no way....I hope he doesn't insist, i don't think he will - he's not religious or particularly adamant. Each to their own though, it is a personal choice. Sorry can't help with your question though. Fx

I think they do it for hygine reasons in some countries ? I'm not sure . My brother had to be circumsised after an accident at 6 and I just remember he was in a lot of pain , but that way well have been related to the accident . I hope someone can give you the information you need but if not why not have a chat to your doctor ?

I've just had my son circumcised - his dad wanted it done for cultural and religious reasons. It's not common in this country but the norm in others. I don't know where you live but they won't do it on the NHS - we had it done privately. The procedure takes about 15 mins and the after care is basically washing his penis twice a day to keep it clean and putting a swab covered in vaseline over it to stop the nappy rubbing. Asher is absolutely fine, he is in no pain from it at all. xx

they do it alot in america from what i have seen and alot do it for religious reasons if it wasnt for your religon or medical reasons i wouldnt personally but each to there own tbh

i hadn't even thought about this! another conversation i'm going to have to have with OH!
my ex was circumcised at 7 for medical reasons and he recounted a lot of pain from the healing process, he was also left with a big scar . . . though at the age of 7 i would have assumed that boy's wouldn't be wanting their mothers cleaning their healing wound! so i would have thought it would be better to do it at a younger age so you can be more in control of the after care! like amandapanda said, her little boy is in no pain, and she's completely in control and knows everything is healing as it should be!

If I had been on team bleu instead of pink then we would have been having LO circumcised for religious and cultural reasons. I think if it is going to be done then its better to get it done when they are younger so that there is no memory of it.

Xx

We won't be getting our fella done unless health reasons but each to their own I don't think it's a problem if u want to or you don't as I'm sure it's fine either way! Only that having it may mean little one is uncomfortable for a while but then will be back to normal! X

My son had it for religious and cultural reasons. I waited till he was 2. It was easy and healed quickly. I personally would not have done it but its my hubby that is African.... In Scotland can get on nhs. My step son had a dodgy op in Gambia and he had to get it fixed here too he was 5 or 6 and not as easy at that age. Oh and the week of heeling it got him out of nappies too, bonus!!

I understand there are religious and other reason people have this done but its seems sooooo cruel :-(

I'd have to agree with this. Cutting off bits of genitals of a newborn baby for anything other than serious medically indicated reasons is just not right. Besides, even for 'religious reasons' surely it's better to wait till they can decide whether or not to get circumcised themselves?

I don't know why it seems that for boys it's ok to do this but female circumcision is a big no-no for any reason. Surely we shouldn't cut anything off any sex babies other than the cord?

I can understand ur point but if it's medical or religious reasons then that's also fine

My sons nearly 3 n he has some thing called ballooning of the penis when he pee's, its when the foreskin is to tight round the penis so balloons up with the pressure when they wee, all baby get it as it helps clean under the foreskin but by now it should be sorting it's self out by stretching a little but it's not
and this may lead to me havin him circumcised, if I'd had know this earlier I'd of prob had him circumcised whilst a young baby so he has no bad memory of it n healing would be easier then with a 3 year old who's going to fiddle! X

Aww Nadine your poor LO, I understand that you wish you had of knew earlier  Hope everything goes well and is sorted afterwards x
