Child Benefits?

I have been looking into benefits so I know what forms I need to fill in once baby is born but I don't know what to apply for. I was told by Child Tax Credits that I can apply for that but need to claim for Child Benefit also. I am unsure though as to what this is. Is it just like family allowance that your parents would get for each child?

Also how long do Child Tax Credits usually take to get back to you about application as I may be entitled to the SureStart Grant but have to wait for CTC to come through 1st. Plus everything has to be done within the first 3 months of baby being born. My head is spinning with it all, its all new to me lol. Any advice/help would be great
