Chilcare costs

Childcare cost are ridiculous, My lo is at nursery for 1.5 days a week and it costs £260 a month, if it wasnt for my mil I wouldnt be able to work, the goverment really need to do something about this as I am sure if they helped more with childcare and took benefits away for not working then there would be more mums in work

The government should be looking at making affordable childcare available for everyone.
I'm going to have to go back to work 4 days, but will only pay for I day at £50. I know I'm very very lucky.
I don't think anyone should ever be in the position that they pay more childcare in a day than they do in wages. That's just wrong. But me personally if I was making like £50 a week after childcare I would still work. I know I'll never get a job like I have again, and couldn't give that up. And it means a lot to me to show my LO me going to work, and earning money.xxx

I think the government needs to regulate what they charge, i don't see why the massive drop in prices at 2 - 3 years?

Its all about the job you have if you love it etc then you would stick with it but those people are lucky as most people i know dont like there jobs. A lot of people are actually worse off working how stupid is that!! x

I always got around the childcare cost problem by working nights. I looked after my little girl and sorted out the school run for my boys in the day and there Dad sorted them out evenings and bedtime when he got home. It was very very hard work, I only did 4 nights a week at a local Tesco but I remember my skin being virtually grey from lack of sleep for the 4 years I worked there.

It was basically the only way to afford the mortgage. If I had to pay childcare we wouldn't have been able to afford to live :(

I'm currently living in Denmark and their child care system is heavily funded by the government. They have a great work/life balance and the majority of mums here go back to work after 6-12 months maternity. They do pay a lot more tax on their salary than uk though.

My LO goes to a child minder and it costs the equivalent of about £250 per month (I pay a set rate and it doesn't matter whether he's in part time or full time, I vary his hours depending on what I'm doing). When I lived in uk I would have been paying nearly £800 for the same. The uk has one of the highest child care rates in Europe

I'll be paying £850 a month to go back full time, it's insane costs and it gas to be the owners racking it in cos most of the staff don't get paid that well! Makes me so mad when other countries like Demark and Sweden manage it so well!

im currently deciding whether to leave LO with a friend for 2 days a week, our local nursery will cost £632 a month for TWO days a week..how on earth can this be fair?!

and what angers me more than anything, if i give up work the government have to pay us some benefits as on OH's salary alone we would be entitled to some?! how ridiculous is that? i want to work and i will be going back for 5 months until suprise baby no.2 arrives.

i dread to think how on earth we are going to cope when my maternity finishes and i have 2 under 3yo

The thing is they are talking about rising over three's hours from 15 to 25 but thats no help to anyone with a child under three, it makes me mad how they talk about stay at home mums as if there sponging and dont want to work when most do but cant afford. x

I can't believe nursery costs! The nursery we were going to use have just put their costs up by 25p an hour. Might not seem huge but id you're paying for a full time place then that's a good chunk added on. Safe to use say Im going to see another nursery.
