My sister has just rung me to tell me that my baby nephew who I was with at the weekend has developed chicken pox :(

Am I right in thinking that because I had it when I was little I don't need to do anything and its only if I hadn't had it then there is a risk to the baby?

Children are contagious with chicken pox up to 11 days before the spots show (so i was told) and they are less contagious (but still contagious) when the spots are present, and when they all dry up (even if the scabs are there for weeks, as long as the blisters are gone), its totally gone. and they are supposed to stay away from pregnant women due to shingles.. even if youve had chicken pox before you can still get shingles. i dont know the effects it has on a pregnant woman or if it affects the baby, sorry.
Hope u are all clear! x

From what i can remember it can affect mother and baby can have problems if it is born when mum has it but i would check with your midwife or google it to be on the safe side.

All the youngest kids came down with it the last 2 weeks of my pregnancy. I never knew to stay away from it. My older sister was also pregnant at the time and her 2 kids had it. We're both fine and our kids. Apparently when babies are born they can't get it in the first 6 weeks of their life as they still have part of your immune system in them (so i was told)

If you've had it you should be fine. My older 2 had it when I was pregnant with my third and that's what my midwife and nhs direct told me.
