Castor oil..should we or shouldn't we!!

I think the best thing is if you're going to do it, don't overdo it..I've read loads of places that it does work. I'm just worried it will make me sick cos still suffering from preg nausea and some regular foods and drink make me queasy, so god knows what castor oil will do! Got my sweep on tues so might wait and see if that works, if not I might try it. I'm booked in for a home birth, if I end up having to be induced I'll have to have a hosp birth instead and really don't want that. Plus my eldest is having an operation on 17th Aug and will have both legs in casts for 6 weeks after, We've promised the kids a trip to a theme park before then..but don't want to go whilst pregnant, so this baby needs to come out!!

Well, I've done it! I took the castor oil! I didn't have as much as the MW recommended though - she said 60ml but I had 30ml with 30 ml orange juice and half a teaspoon of bicarbonate soda.

I took it about 2 and a half hours ago and have been drinking lots of water to stay hydrated. I've only been to the loo once though and that was normal...no diarrhea (tmi)

Baby has been wriggling away and I'm having strong braxton hicks. I'm not too hopeful about it working to be honest as maybe 30ml is far too little, but I was a bit scared to take any more.

I'll let you know if there's any change - sorry, I've totally crashed this thread!

Are you going to try it Abby?? xxx

Im wondering if after my check up on wedensday will I feel the same way ?

Lol don't worry about crashing..maybe I should rename it! Let us know if anything develops, if I do it I'll be lke you and very cautious with it, last thing i want is sickness and diarrhea during labour! I'm having quite strong BH today so you maybe he will get a move on and come out on his own!

hey ladies, sorry your all suffering with overdueness :hugs: hope i don't go over, of i do not buy much, but i'm planning on getting some clary sage oil if i do. have any of you thought about using it? or have used it? i know a few people on her have used it and seemed to work for quite a few of them! anyhow hope you all get progressing soon x

I've been putting it in my bath for ages and nothing . Is there anything else your supposed to do with it ?

I wonder if it worked or is working for lucia?? anyone else going to try it? x

You can get castor oil at tesco, they were sold out when i went in though, clary sage you prob have to get from health food shop. What are you suposed to do with it? I heard you can massage with it but don't see how that would start off labour?? Been having loads of stron g braxton hicks today but not turning into anything regular..hubby works nights and is out tonight so hope it doesn't start up really late!

I think its fine to take castor oil but no more than 2 tablespoons (check online to confirm amount).... As long as you don't drink the bottle I think they say its safe enough....

Babe, Baby will come out when he or she is ready.. Ive heard caster oil make your baby distress.. my cousin had some when she was pregnant and had C-section.. seriously, would you wanna risk it luv? enjoy and walk allot.. I was 8 days overdue give birth Monday and had my induction booked on Thursday... Just do alot of walking..rest rest and more rest dont think about birth..

i think babies will come when theyre ready, i understand it feels like a lifetime but once theyre here time flies and you really dont have very long to wait, u have all waited the lovely 9 months , let baby come when s/he wants to :D fx for plenty of birth announcements soon xxx

Hows everyone feeling ? I'm getting ready to take Aoibheann off out for the day once she has had her nap :) Then my sister will be over later to help me do something with my hair . Been having bh's off and on since dinner yesterday but nothing strong or long enough for me to think its anything and I managed to sleep so yay for that !

bloomin awful! Was up till gone 3 last night, couldn't sleep cos was having pains every 10 mins for hours, and it was soooo hot! No pains today as yet..i just wish this baby woudl come out!!

Its the bloody pains starting and stopping that is driving me mental :hugs:

I personally wouldnt use castor oil. My mum did with my brother and he went in to distress and she had to have an emergency c section.
Mum doesnt know why she used it since she already had 4 kids she knew it was risky but a friend recommened it.

Yep i know exactly what you mean..the not knowing if this is it or not!! hubby works nights as well so had the added worry of being alone and not wanting to call him hme for nothing. Have tried everything except the oil now, been drinking pineapple juice for weeks, have had hot curry, sex, red wine, walked loads..I can't bear it any more it's too hot!!!!

i don't see how a couple tablespoons of a natural remedy like castor oil would send a baby into distress..lots of MW's recommend it, in moderation. I should imagine drinking huge amounts would be bad, as would overdosing on any laxatives, and if mum feels ill with it then baby likely to suffer too.
It's more likely that very overdue babies are more liekly to suffer complications and pass meconium into waters anyway.

My mate drank a whole bottle of the stuff with pure orange on all three of her pregnancies, dont think Id like to try it tho, wouldnt want to go into labour with the runs lol Thats definitely not something they could net out of the pool lol

Yikes a whole bottle, she must have a strong stomach! I'm not sure I have the nerve to try it yet anyway, gonna wait and see if the sweep gets me going.
