I thought it was standard too? I don't like needles but when I had my tonsils out at beginning of this year (when I was pregnant but didn't know) I got a bit attached to mine I had to have one for the op and then one the next day when I was rushed in with dehydration and didn't want them to take it out in case I needed another one and was quite relieved to have it there in case I needed anything. Try not to overthink it but the sounds of it you might not have to have one and even if you do think of it as peace of mind that if anything does happen then don't have to inject you as they can just give you what you need through that I know there not nice tho xxx
I needed one as I had a epidural. I usually hate needles and am a proper whimp but the cannula wasnt that bad at all.
I hardly noticed it going in and the Mw managed to get mine competed wrong, she pierced both sides of the vein so I bled everywhere but I didn't look and it was fine. Xx
I had one to... Midwife couldn't get it in. So had to wait for a doctor to try again. Wasn't bad at all... Will be one of the last things your worrying about in labour xxx
I asked a registrar I saw a couple of weeks ago who assured me they won't insert one unless absolutely neccessary, they don't do it for 'just in case' purposes.
I know they don't leave the needle in, in fact I have removed many cannulas from patients so far during my nurse training, but the thought of having to have one myself literally scares the shit out of me!! I get into a state enough when I have to have blood taken! I just wish I didn't have such a stupid phobia!! xx
