Hi All,

Just wondering what happens straight after birth and for stay in hospital for Mums who are breastfeeding?
Are you expected to breastfeed just while your in hospital and switch to bottle at home or do you take formula to hospital
to start using immediately?

How would you like to feed your baby?

They will try to push breastfeeding on you probably, but have a think about what you'd like to do and they'll have to accept it either way :)

If you want to breastfeed, they will support you and try to help best they can. Some maternity wards even have an advisor who is trained in helping breastfeeding Mums. We had one and she gave me loads of tips and advice (it's not as easy as it sounds!)

A couple of times though, I was so tired and they just fed her a bottle while I slept which I was really upset about :shakehead:

Straight after birth though they will probably encourage you to try and breastfeed your baby. Not only is it good for both Mum & baby with bonding etc, they like to check the baby's sucking reflex too.

If you want to bottlefeed you can start in hospital, but as Dannii says they will try to encourage you to breasfeed. You need to check with your hospital whether they provide formula, or if you have to bring it. Round here the main hosp provides it the midwife units don't.

they did that to me too. they said i was 'exhausted' but i wasn't! took zach for the night, gave him formula from a bottle twice & a dummy.
now he won't ditch the dummy and the formula made him sick. which, the midwives left him led in. when he was brought back to me he had a rash on his face from the sick being left on it, it was all down his front & on the matteress. really pissed me off.

Gosh Charlotte that is horrible!!! I would have been so mad!!
It may not be any consolation but dummies are a good thing for helping to prevent SIDS apparently! Just trying to find some positives for you lol!
