Hi all. Apologies, I know there was a thread like this recently but I can't find it. What is everyone's opinion on booking an overseas holiday whilst TTC? A local airline has return flights for free so it's cheap to fly to Japan (as a Japanese teacher I do need to go there every few years to stay relevant). We'd be looking at going around Halloween. I don't want to book it and have to cancel if I get pregnant, but I don't want to not book it just because we might manage to conceive. If it comes to October and we haven't conceived we'll probably need a holiday!! Though maybe if I am pregnant we could go anyway? What would you do?

I would consider a few things:

1. If you were to conceive at next opportunity, how many weeks would you be at the time of the holiday. Some airlines don't like you to fly after a certain gestation (approx 34-36 weeks) - can differ between airlines.
2. Where you want to go - avoiding places known to have risk of Zika exposure for example.
3. You also need to factor in that things can happen that you can't predict or control. E.g. I would still be planning holidays as you need things to look forward to especially if TTC doesn't go to plan. But also have to remember that you may come across something (e.g. a condition in pregnancy) where it's not suitable for you to travel, but that's a risk we all take in general anyway. Perhaps an annual travel insurance policy would cover this, but best to check.

Keeping things happy, positive and holidays do that are important. I wouldn't put my life on hold completely.

I hope that helps!

x

PS - if pregnant and far along, make sure you get a fit to fly letter before you go! x

Completely agree with everything said above, I think as long as where you are travelling isn't dangerous to go to during pregnancy or you won't be too far along for the flights I'd go for it. I think we've always said not booking anything more than 6 months in advance just in case we caught on

Thanks for the advice ladies! I booked the holiday anyway. I found the other thread and my advice was not to put life on hold because there's no guarantee you'll ever get pregnant. Taking my own advice here, and I can't ignore a good deal! Decided that if I end up pregnant and some unforeseen issue prevents me from flying, I'll just pay the name change fee and give the tickets to my sister and her partner. :)

If I catch this cycle and all goes well, I'll be 27 weeks when we leave and 29 when we get back. Assuming it's a healthy pregnancy that should be alright. If we don't conceive at all by then, it'll mark just over one year TTC and we can start planning the next phase when we get back I guess.

Zika isnt an issue in Japan but that's an important thing to consider that I wouldn't have thought of so thank you!

Yay glad to hear you've booked it, hopefully you'll be enjoying a nice holiday with your bump

Glad you Booked your holiday. I kept putting holidays of just incase. Unfortunately it took me longer than I hoped to have a baby . So I started to live my life and I booked holidays. However I always made sure they were 4/ 5 away just incase so I knew I could still go if I did get pregnant. Have a wonderful time x

I book things 6 months in advance, we shouldn’t put our life on hold indefinitely!

Totally agree with the others. No one expects to be in it for the long game but sadly it's a reality for so many couples. We were in it for so much longer than we planned and after a while, I realised I needed things to look forward to just for my own sanity!! If you're not pregnant, you will regret not going far more than having to make adjustments if you are. We also worked with the 6 month rule unless we could cancel or rearrange without too many issues. Have a great holiday!!

Glad to hear it! Have a great time! x

Thanks guys :) I think looking forward to the holiday and focusing on that will make it easier to deal with this whole TTC deal, because it really does emotionally drain you after a while. I am hoping to travel with a bump but if not, at least I'll be able to go on roller coasters and drink exotic cocktails :) gotta stay positive!
