Hi everyone,

Hope you're all having a nice weekend. I received a letter from the hospital to confirm I am Rhesus D Negative and that this may cause problems.

Apparently if the baby is the same negative blood type, then all is well, but if they are positive (inherited from father) then my body may produce antibodies to attack and destroy the baby's positive cells. Can cause Heamolytic Disease of the Newborn.

There is a preventative injection called anti-D taken from negative male blood donors which is given at 28-30 weeks and at birth.

Just wanted to know whether anyone else has had this injection? did you experience any complications or is it pretty routine? Any info will be great!

xx

I’m also resus negative. I’ve had a baby before though. Caused no issues what so ever. I had the injection at 28 weeks, but didn’t need one after he was born as they tested his blood and he’s a negative blood type too.
Currently 18 weeks with my second. Had to have an anti d injection already at 12 weeks as I had some bleeding. Then all being well will have the normal one at 28 weeks and then potentially after he’s born depending on his blood.
I don’t think it can cause any problems this pregnancy even if the baby is a positive blood type, it’s future pregnancies that your body would try and fight. But that’s why you have the injection anyway to prevent this.
Honestly I’ve never heard of anyone having any issues, don’t worry it’s all routine.

As meg says, it’s all routine and nothing to worry about. I’ve has it as have a lot of friends, no isssues but talk to your mw if you’re worried x

Me too, it's really nothing to worry about - my mum also so 30 years ago they were giving the same injection, plus my sister - and she's had 4 kids again all with no problems. Don't worry :)

Yup I’ve had it, midwife told me at my appt that it only really affects future pregnancies to which I said there will be no more after this first one! Currently in hospital being induced!

They actually forgot about me and I didn't know till I was 34w that I was Rh- they did anti d then. No issues except I had to be induced incase DD got haemolytic disease they induced me at 40w all was fine DD was RH- too X

All very routine. In any case this pregnancy would be fine but you don’t want to develop antibodies against other pregnancies.
I’ve seen a baby need a transfusion during pregnancy via the umbilical cord because Mum didn’t have anti d in her previous pregnancy!

Thank you. Crikey! Glad they've spotted it already then! x
