Luca's nose is still blocked, after 4 bloody weeks.

Friends and family are telling me to stop moaning, that it's just a cold. But, a 4 week cold, really? Since yesterday I'm not happy just leaving him anymore. He was only managing 2oz during the night and it seemed he genuinely couldn't breathe through his nose. Seems like we've been using saline drops a million times a day, they make no difference. The strange thing is, it doesn't seem as bad during the day and now that I'm going to see the hv today, I'm worried she will say "Oh he's fine it's only a little cold". He seems quite phlemy too, but only during the night. I've raised his mattress in his Moses basket too.

Would there be any point in seeing the hv or should I go straight to GP? I feel like I'll be called a hypochondriac but I can't leave him like this any longer, especially now its affecting his feeds xx

I would have him checked and Id ask for the first person who will see you, ie HV or GP. I think Id always pref see a GP if given a choice.

I remember for the first few weeks Jackson being a bit blocked - we used one of the wee nose sucky things to evacuate the snot, also used olbas drops in water in the room and things.. It changed eventually.

xxx

I think you should see both - hvs are specialists in child health but GPs are good too. Having two different opinions may help.

Get checked tho keep in mind theres over 200 cold strains one can come after another so its possible but deff ger checked to be safe x

My GP and HV never agree on whats wrong with Jackson, so I dont even bother with my HV now xx

HV suggested that sucky thing for his nose, just got home and used it and nothing came out. Grr, so frustrating.

I'm going to book an app to see the GP tomorrow morning, my GP is very good so he'll see us before 11am. Apparently there are some drops that can be prescribed, not saline ones, but something else. Also hoping to get something prescribed for all the phlem. Poor little thing. I'll let you know how we get on tomorrow. Thanks for the advice ladies xx

Caleb had a blocked nose like this for about 8 weeks I think it was, I took him to the GP to be checked in case it was a chest infection but all was fine, how old is your LO? some babies inhale a lot of the amniotic fluid when they are being born and it can cause them to have a blocked nose for a good few weeks, I didn't know that could happen but it's true. Could just be a cold though, poor Caleb has had about 6 colds since he was born and all of them have been horrible xxx

Turn the shower on really hot to fill the bathroom with steam and strip him to his nappy and take him in the room, steam helps to clear sinuses. Not too long though as it'll be really hot and make sure you have a towel to wrap him up when you go out the room as the change in temperature can be a shock. My little boy suffered for what seems like forever when he was little. Also we got some snuffle babe but if I remember he was too young at the time but we smeared some over a muslin and tied it out of reach but near him when he was sleeping so he got the vapours. Also a bowl of water near him when he's sleeping will keep the air moist. It will pass but as a family, one or all of us is usually suffering with some type of illness, so frustrating

Hi lulu, my little lady has had a blocked nose since 4 days old ( she's now 71/2 weeks!) it got really bad but two weeks ago we bought a humidifier for the bedroom, and at first had it downstairs , I sit her in bathroom when I have a shower too, steam helps and she loves it.

We have a sucker for her nose from boots which gets rid of all mucus and use calpol saline drops which loosen it all up, it's made such a difference. They said hers is because she's a c section baby as I thought it was a cold but apparently not.

But all those things have reduced it and made her so much better, as she was struggling to Breath and choking on it, now it's just a snuffle.

Hope he's better soon xxx

She's worse on a night too and what made her sleep better was a cosy mama sleep positioner , it's on a slant n has sides that hold her so they feel snug. We've found it drains mucus better than when she's flat n since that she doesn't wake up with the stuffy nose like she used to , just for bottles.

I had no clue but all the above was recommended to me by drs/hv and friends Etc , saline drops work amazing with the sucker . We didn't notice any difference but couldn't get anything out her nose then used then n after a week we get loads now , x

How is your LO getting on? My DD has had a cold since the start of August :-( Full of snot! I've tried getting her to up her vitamins with drops but she hates them, she's fine in the day but coughs through the night and has snot everywhere the first hour or so after waking up.
Wish I could make her feel better :-( x

Hi ladies, sorry I'm late with the update.

GP said his chest is completely clear which is good. Was prescribed otrivine nasal drops to use just once a day for 3 days. He's a million times better now, still got a little sniffle but nowhere near as bad as it was. Now putting karvol in boiling water in the room at night time, it's really helping. Thank you for all your advice xx
