Tom's 18 months today and is still only saying Dada. He does say 'Mama' occasionally but that's it.
Should i be worried? Everything I've read says he should be saying plenty of words by now.

I would suggest you ask your HV or doctor for a hearing test for Tom to check that he can hear sounds etc. and raise your concerns.
If you are still concerned if the test results are ok, ask to be referred to a speech and language therapist. good luck.

I'm pretty sure his hearing is ok as he responds to his name and he understands so much.
If I ask him to go and get his shoes or tell him it's lunch time, he totally understands.
He points to things he wants and babbles away all day. He's very chatty, just doesn't form any proper words.
I called my HV today and she said she'd call me tomorrow so I'll see what she says.

Evie is the same - she babbles loads but I can only understand 'dada', she will also say 'dog' but thats a bit more random. Her comprehension is excellent, she understands lots but just doesn't sat defined words. I'd be interested what your HV says, let us know

Tia had very bad speech problems and by 18 months I knew that things weren't right.. but also her comprehension with the spoken word wasn't brilliant. She responded much better to signing. Apparently in the UK they are much more receptive now to speech delay... they would barely entertain me when I voiced my concerns about Tia...

The first step I did was a persistent and constant harassing of my HV and GP until someone took notice and tested her... I had to go to a special 6 week parenting class as to how I was supposed to deal with my baby to help her talk and passed with flying colours... which made them pay attention afterwards. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

But if you are really worried, just keep on at them.. :) You live with your baby you know him best ...

Stanley was 18 months before he started saying Mama.

It's really in the last couple of months that his speech has lept forward, and now he can't stop naming parts of the body, shapes and colours!

I think the second half of that second year is key for that. Stanley spent the first half concentrating on his motor skills :D

My nephew was not understandable to a couple of months ago hun and he is 2.5!! He had really slow speech and just pointed to stuff and said ''uuh'' but he understood everything and knew what everything was, even stuff you wouldnt expect him to know, he would nod his head for yes and shake it for no so he knew how to communicate he just wasn't doing it vocally, then after he turned 2 it just kinda started to develop day by day and even though no he is still kinda shy with it (if you talk to him he might not respond, or if you say ''shout mummy and tell her your hungry'' he won't its like he feels pressured or something) but he speaks when he wants and can say most things now and we can finally understand him!

I think maybe tbh some babies are just slower at talking than others, but obviously get it checked out if your worried im just saying try not to be hun

jack has just attended his second speech therapy session. his speech is non-excistent. he points sometimes.we are learnin makaton as a bridge to the speech. it early days but i think any help is good.

like minxy mentioned kids have different priorities, tom has probably been concentrating on his movement etc and speech has not been a priority, luke says a few words now but he didn't get walking properly til he was about 15 months old!! to this day luke will not pull himself up to standing and i am worried about that! i think they just like to keep us on our toes! :)

like you say he can understand you and responds appropriately and you would know in your heart of hearts if there was something wrong its a mothers intuition, i'm more than sure he is ok? how did it go with the health visitor by the way?

i been on the internet looking up cheap crocs for luke and its all your fault!! :D

Thanks all so much for replying.

I spoke to my HV today and she's coming over at 1pm tomorrow to 'assess' him.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Lisa...buy those crocs! They're brilliant! xx PS: Have you googled croclings? They are SO sweet! x

My friend in work had a little boy on the same day as I had Ruby, he too only says dadda so far where as Ruby is constantly saying new words...I think very baby is different and they all develop at different speeds

I bet all of a sudden he will take off and you wont be able to shut him up!!! Rubys fav at the mo is "No"...to everything!! Its driving me insane :rotfl:

Nathan doesn't say anything yet, I don't believe he still hasn't even said mama yet. I spoke to the HV last month and she has referred us to a speech therapist. I still haven't had an appointment through yet but my HV was really good over it.

Relief!

The HV came over today to assess Tom and left saying we have absolutely nothing to worry about. Phew!

I think she was concerned about autism as Tom appears not to really recognise people he sees often like my Mum and Gran.

She said he was very engaged in everything she did and was so close to talking. He gave her lots of eye contact and understood what we were saying so she is not worried at all.

She did say that it may help if we just back-off a bit and let him go at his own pace. She suggested taking him to rhyme time at our library so he sees other children talking more.

She gave me some leaflets on encouraging speech so if anyone else wants a copy, PM me with your address and I'll sent them to you.

I'm a VERY relieved Mummy today. Thanks all of you for your advice and support.

Yay, go Pea!

Lucy, he'll start going in leaps and bounds now, just you watch. You'll get a new surprise every day!

I love the toddler age. I enjoyed caring for baby Stanley, but now we have such a laugh together, it's fab :D

Awww..thanks Zoe.

I felt all emotional this afternoon. I just love the little fella so much. He has started 'jumping' today which basically involves a lot of crouching and standing up very quickly. Sooooo sweet.

What with the PND, I found the baby bit very tough but now being a Mum is so enjoyable and the love I feel for him is overwhelming sometimes. xx

So glad your HV has eased your concerns  I just think he's only just turned 18months, and all babies vary with development so try not to be concerned, I'm sure he will be fine given time  I say that from experience as my cousins little boy wouldn't/didn't speak until he was well over 2yrs old and once he did, oh my, was he the articulate, literate little superstar, he was so well spoken and very, very chatty indeed, I'm sure Tom's heading that way, very best wishes, I'm sure he'll be fine
