Bisphenol A - how safe is your baby?

This was on the news some time ago too....along with warnings about sterilising bottles using heating methods, i.e. steaming - where possible it was advised to cool water sterilise bottles and teats. The amount of nasty stuff in baby bottles, food, jars etc is unbelievable. Guess it's another good reason to breastfeed

THis is the first time I've heard of this too. It is a big worry. xxx

this is old news rehashed as another scare story..

now I'm normally a super paranoid mum but I'm not going to get too worried about this.. http://www.bisphenol-a.org/

"life is a terminal illness with a 100% mortality rate" :)

for those that are - the born free bottles are BPA free (although they are still plastic so will still have chemicals in that could be potantially harmful)
who knows.....

I noticed in the states that their bottles are labelled if they're free from it, I guess it's something they need to do in the UK so parents can make informed choices. Quite scary really!

I'm guessing that glass bottles are safer, so there is always that option. I know you can get glass bottles for expressed milk so you must be able to get glass feeding bottles?

just to note.. its breastfeeding awareness week next week.. what a coinkidink eh!

You think it's a conspiracy to encourage more mums to breastfeed?

So far today alone they have said bottles have this chemical and breatfed babies may be brainer and aptimall have released a new advert promoting breastfeeding. So yes I think there is some media pushing going on.

Wooohoooo finally :D Normally you just get bitter female journalists who failed at breastfeeding banging on about how women who suceed are the breastfeeding mafia. It's great to see some positive pushing of breastfeeding going on, hopefully it will help our dismally low rates of it! And encourage the government to put more money into helping support women who are having trouble and are not finding that it comes naturally.

Grr! Why do they do this? If it's so harmful, why don't they make bottle manufacturers take it out? And what about all of us, I'm sure us women have all been bottle fed at one time or another, and we seem to be ok! Just checked my bottles, and sure enough, they're marked with number 7 AND PC.... Very worrying. Where can I get bottles which don't have this?

hmm the advert is more pushing their product rather then breastfeeding, putting as being the closest formula to breastmilk so I don't think aptimal are getting behind the breastfeeding issue at all.

As for the bottles, isn't it the way that they are being heated that is causing the chemical to be released? If you are concerned there are bottles out there without this in, green baby sell the glass ones too.

wasnt it.. if you squeeze the bottles andthey give a bit they are safe? if they dont and are the thick plastic type they are the ones that have this chemical?

Thats what I thought they had said

Well the article linked in the first post said if it has a number 7 in the middle of the recycling symbol (bottom of bottle) or if it has the letters PC on it, those are the ones with the chemical in it. But yeah, as long as you don't pour boiling water in them, and change them regularly, then in theory they should be fine.

Just curious...how many of you bought some non-BPA or glass bottles yesterday?

i didnt and im still pouring boiling water into mine and steaming them.

You'd spend your life worrying about these things if you let them get to you  tbh you should be more worried about the amount of cr*p your baby inhales just pushing them along next to a busy road

I think that there is already plenty of positive pushing of breastfeeding going on and that those of us who are bottle feeding should not be made to feel like we are failures/bad mothers because we don't breast feed. Everyone knows that breast is best, but they should leave people alone if they choose not to do it!

On the bottle front, if it was that worrying they would have withdrawn them - the paper yesterday siad this is one study and that there have been others that say it is perfectly safe.

and there should be, the UK has one of the lowest amount of breastfeeders, one main reason being that there isn't enough support.

I am very sorry you were not able to breastfeed, it is not aimed at anyone that has not been able too, how many times does this have to be said, it is to inform women and to try and get women to have ago at breastfeeding.

Also the aptimal advert is a complete con! making out formula is the best thing to move onto when you finish at 6 months. ( er did we have to? I thought thats when you could wean onto food?)
Another clever ad making mums who breastfeed past 6 months feel like shit, ever thought about that? :|

And no there isnt enough positive breastfeeding adverts and help, its because of that women "choose" to bottle feed because they are given the wrong information, it is NOT aimed at women unable to breastfeed, maybe if you felt that strongly you would do everything in your power to support women who haven't been able too and to help new mums in trying to overcome the problems you had. Your learning is anothers triumph.

If this is of concern to you then I can tell you that MAM bottles are definatly free from BPA.

To quote the article 'Although the level of risk is not certain..' so is there an actual risk or not? I think it's just disgusting these stories are published with NO ACTUAL FACTUAL FINDINGS :x In this country there are so many laws baby products have to pass, why on earth would these bottles still be on shelves if they caused real risks? They've already removed medised off shelves and that comes with loads of instructions/ingrediants, these stories really make me annoyed, BIG hugs to everyone who's concerned, I would change bottles if you are and chat to your HV/GP about it
