So... I managed to beat induction! Yippeee.
The race was ok as I was booked in for induction at 40+2 due to the medication I was on. My lovely community midwife agreed to give me a sweep dead on 40 weeks to try and get things going.
So at 12pm on Thursday I was swept... cervix was stretchy and I she pulled out my plug (nice) and got me to 2cm dilated plus had a nice feel of the baby's head. I was instructed to go for a walk.
So at 2.30 I went off down the road with mum and Seren and got home at 3pm. Then had a contraction. Except I had completely forgotten what contractions felt like. I just thought it was aches and pains from the sweep.
After about 4 hours of pains I said to my husband that maybe I should start timing them as the pains were coming and going. Slight shock - they were coming around every 10 minutes. Mum went into panic mode and got dinner on the table pretty quick after that.
NOTE TO ALL LADIES. DO NOT EAT ANY FORM OF BEANS OR PULSES WHEN IN LABOUR.
My dinner of salmon, new potatoes and butter beans went down a treat...
I phoned up labour ward after dinner, told them contractions were coming around every 5-7 minutes. They told me to come in when they were about 2-3 minutes apart. EEK. Sounded rather close together but we live about 10 minutes drive from the hospital so wasn't too stressed out.
Had a bath, then sat down to watch Location Location on record. Only got half way through when my husband said to me "we are going to the hospital now". I didn't want to go, wanted to watch the end of it, but he could see how quickly the contractions were coming...
Painful journey to the hospital, got to triage just after 23.15. Got checked out and examined, was 5cm! Labour established at 23.50.
Had a student midwife and another midwife. Both lovely. Got on the gas and air. Bethan turned out to be the biggest wriggler in labour. She did not stop moving throughout the entire process.
My god, the contractions were so painful but I was coping, coming really quickly. I had no concept of time, I had my eyes shut. I was still fully dressed when after a particularly violent contraction my bottom half was stripped off. Then my waters went pop. Then the after effects of dinner started happening. I kept farting. How embarrassing!
It got to the point where I didn't think I could cope any longer when i felt the need to push. I was 10cm at 1.20am! Then after 2 massive pushes and me roaring like a lion (and a small poo), Bethan arrived! She was born at 1.33am. So it was all very quick, which was amazing. I was so glad I did it on gas and air, but pushing a baby out felt the wrongest thing ever.
I was completely fooked from the adrenalin and I was shaking so much I couldn't hold her for about 30 minutes. They got some sugar into me and I calmed down and had a lovely cuddle with her.
She's a lovely little thing, got her home after 12 hours. She has latched on well although my nips are sore but that will calm down in a week or so. I feel really good despite the lack of sleep. I do feel as I have been brutally kicked down below though. But it was so worth it.
