Ok, so as I've said once before my OH is very keen on the name Bertie for a boy.

My thoughts are that it could just be a name on its own. Or should it be short for something, I've come up with the obvious ones below but any opinions would be helpful

Albert, Robert etc (but what if it's shortened into first sylable instead?)
Bertram (Doesn't really work with surname)

Oh, and they listed Herbert and Hubert on 'Behind the name' too :D

I used to go to school with a girl called Roberta and she called herself Bertie.....I think if you start off shortening it to Bertie straight away then people will accept that and not shorten to the first syllables. Although be prepared for when he is a teenager to want to call himself plain old Rob or Al, lol xx

Great idea , Albert is lovely and unusual and Bertie or Al, are both nice too

I think you're right, he will probably get called what ever we call him at home, I like Albert too, and pretty much all English is Germanic in origin, unlike the latin derivative languages like French and Italian.

What do you think of us just putting Bertie on his birth certificate and not providing the option?

(of course all this is asuming we ever have a boy!)

I'm a bit opposed to the name Bertie simply because it is a popular dog name in my area, same for Ruby.

I know three dogs called Bertie and four called Ruby, and what kills me about Ruby is that all the dogs are black!

So, I like the name but it's a bit tarnished to me unfortunately - why someone would call their dog Bertie i have no idea.

I do like the name Albert, but if you are going to put Albert on the birth certificate then you yourselves should call him Albert imo.

If you want to call him Bertie, throw it on his birth certificate and i guess he can always call himself Bert at work and thing - i mean Bertie isn't very age friendly either.

Yes, I think you're right. I let my undying love for PG Wodehouse novels (Jeeves and Wooster) convince me that Bertie was a fab name for a gentleman.....

But maybe it would end up being Bert, which just reminds me of Bert and Ernie
