Im still currently on Maternity leave at the moment and don't intend to return to work until July. I receive SMP which is approx. £136 per week. I applied for working tax credits and child tax credits but I only receive money for child tax credits as I earned too much money, this was calculated from my 2012-2013 tax form. I really don't understand how the HRMC calculate what im entitled to receive based on my income from 2012-2013 as that clearly shows my income from working full time and not what I actually have to live on with SMP . Is there anything I can do about this as Im finding it difficult to pay everything with my SMP and child tax credit( which isn't much at all) . Surely they should calculate it based on your current earnings ?

Its done on the year before earnings not sure y

It will be done of the previous year as they know exactly what you earned. You could leave your job this year or be made redundant so that would make the figures inaccurate. When you don't go back to work after maternity you can let them know your situation and your entitlements will change.
