As some of you may know, I own Ouch! Body Jewellery. One of our ranges is pregnancy retainers, which we have sold for a number of years.
The benefits of pregnancy retainers are that they give women the opportunity to keep their piercing open throughout the whole of their pregnancy, meaning that they don't have to deal with the added worry of whether they will need to re-pierce after they have had their baby. They are also ideal for scans where women are not permitted to wear jewellery.
Yes, some women's piercings will remain open all the way through their pregnancy and beyond, without using a pregnancy retainer - however there is no way of knowing this unless you try, by which time it will be too late when you find you can no longer get your favourite belly bar through!
The retainer bars are made from polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) which is a biocompatible, non-stick substance - it is so biologically inert that it is actually used in cosmetic reconstruction surgery. Not to mention the fact that lymph cannot stick to it in any way, which is why professional piercers frequently use PTFE when carrying out new piercings. Its flexibility allows it to bend when it needs to, which is great for a belly which is increasing in size all the time.
The retainers are very flexible and are available in a wide range of sizes. On the contrary, the average size of a metal banana from a high street store is 10mm which, for most women, will not be large enough for the latter stages of pregnancy. Our standard range alone is available in sizes 8mm to 24mm, but we also make custom sizes longer than that if required. The range of sizes means that there will always be a retainer to fit you at any stage during your pregnancy.
So ... wearing a retainer will take away the worry of maybe having to re-pierce afterwards; they are biocompatible which makes them completely incapable of causing infection; they are flexible which is ideal for pregnancy, and you will always find one that fits you whatever stage of your pregnancy you are at. Always remember to have at least a couple of millimetres of bar spare at each end - wearing a retainer that is too tight, or where the end balls are snug next to the holes of your piercing, carries the risk of irritation and possibly infection.
Enough of the boring stuff. If you've decided you're going to get one then we have a huge range of styles and colours.

At the end of the day you don't have to wear one ... but if you want to keep something through your piercing for the duration of your pregnancy which is both comfortable and safe (not to mention a little bit fun and stylish!) then they are ideal.
