As you ladies know I was off to see the consultant today to discuss my options regarding the birth of my baby...due to my panic attacks and vomiting phobia I have been in such a state as you all know!!

Im pleased to say it went really well.

And im going for a natural birth!! The consultant was really, really supportive and understanding and when I told him my fears he was like 'Right, this is what we are going to do....' and we talked about the whole thing really throughly and he wrote me a plan of 'action' to be followed by the midwifes from the moment I arrive at the hozzy.

He said to me my best option is to go for an epidural and to have this as soon as possible, along with a drug called Stemetil (which is an anti sickness drug.) They do not normally keep this drug on the ward and is not usually given until the patient is actually ill but they are giving it to me as an exception and have ordered it today, its on my plan now.

He also said that im NOT allowed pethadine, and Gas and Air will not even be allowed in the room :rotfl: as these are the two things that are most likely to make someone sick. He says I can have the epidural topped up all through the labour so I wont feel much pain (hopefully) although they may let it wear off slightly near the end so that I can have some sensation to push etc. Im just hoping il be able to cope at the end with an epidural whilst pushing, and not need anything else cos there wont be anything to have!!

Finally, im also going to have another drug called Oxytocin to pass the placenta which is given via a drip (and not the Syntometrine injection which is given to most women as this can make some people ill too.)

Bless him, he was jamaican and such a lovely, caring man. He told me I had a 'good heart'

So im hoping all is going to go along nicely and that I will have a good, calm experience. I am relieved there are options, as I really thought I would have to have a section because there would be no 'way out' so to speak. Im going to be so proud of myself when I have my baby, that prob sounds silly but this has been a huge ordeal for me.

The main thing is I feel calmer and more prepared and I couldnt have done it without you lot, you fab bunch!

So baby, you can come now!! Also, the consultant has made me an appt to be induced on 12th Jan, a week after my due date if baby hasnt arrived by then, he only wants me to go 7 days over so thats good news too.

Thanks again everyone

you will feel so proud after giving birth it will change you its changed me i feel like superwoman

i had some thing to stop me being sick? cant remember what it was they gave me it before the pethidene as pethidene makes people sick.

after i gave birth i was waling and running about the ward had a nice bath after a hour or so i was the only one out of 5 in my room that gave birth naturally i felt real sorry for the other girls with the pain they seemed to be in with cathiter(sp) and ild hate not having a bath.

I was very worried about feeling sick, as I get it often and didnt want it to interfere with the labour.
In the end I had a meptid and epidural and didnt feel sick with either :) though the midwife was arguing with me to have gas and air and I didnt want it

sorry to ask but I always thought that a natural birth was where you dont have any drugs at all?

Well I dunno what else you can call it??

A vaginal birth? When I say giving birth 'naturally' I mean vaginally, but pure au natural is no drugs, yes.

Thats good to hear Kristal. Did she want you to have gas and air when you had had the epidural or before?

ah right, I got you now :) I was lucky in that I didnt have stitches or anything but I had to have a ventouse (trust me if you think you cant go on pushing like I did after two and a half hours and fifteen in labour! PUSH HARDER!! lol)

I had gas and air after the meptid started wearing off and the guy who was going to give me the epidural was runnng late (again I didnt want gas and air but the first midwife out of three that I had in the end cause I was so long in labour was horrible and kept telling me to have it, I was making some noise mind lol!) and then when I was going through the actual pushing then they were telling me to have gas and air.

Hope that helps you and good luck :)

i'm so glad that you had a good chat with your consultant... he sounds really fab and I am so pleased that he took the time to work out a plan for you that will really suits your needs... we could do with a few more of those kinds of docs around.
