We won't be having a christening/baptism for Pixie and I think some of the family may be little disappointed to be missing out on an important family event.

I'm adamant that it's not appropriate for us to have a religious ceremony but I've been thinking about having a "Naming Day". Has anyone else done this sort of thing that can offer some advice?

:)

havent done it, or anyting, but its what we are planning instead of religious celebrations :)

me and lee feel the same Jo and my family seem to be disappointed and this was something that I had thought about as a happy medium so to speak, but i have no idea where to start and even if that is the road we want to go down. Lees thoughts on the matter are we shouldn't be pushed into doing anything we dont feel comfy doing but i worry that it will upset family members as well

I dont want to go into to much info here as its in off topic, but am happy to PM with info!! But I had a baby naming for my lil one, and it was so special, it was personalsied to our thoughts and wishes, it was slightly longer then a normal christenin, but thats the way we wanted it, I cant say to much more without going into detail which as said I dont want to here as its off topic

My friend had a blessing day for her son which was lovely. He wasn't given a religion, just blessed by a priest.

Then there was a party afterwards, was lovely. I like the idea of a naming day though too. :)

Oh dear, I just asked Pez his opinion on it (no I hadn't consulted him before :D). He just shrugged gave me a blank look then giggled and said I dunno. I do feel obliged to do something for the family, especially the in-laws as they've done so much for us.

I'd love to to hear about about your day Rock-Angel, apart from maybe asking FiL to do a speech to welcome Pixie to the family I've no idea what else to do. (Food and drink go without saying :D)

I really couldn't go to a priest, we're not church goers and it just wouldn't feel right. We're just a bunch of heathens and intend to stay that way :lol

I really like the idea of a baby naming day :D

It sounds like a lovely compromise and you should have a great day!

Im just in full swing of organising one for my daughter. I have it booked for Sunday 1st March. I have done everything myself, even writing the script.

My SIL has held 3 naming days for all her 3 children so I had 3 scripts to have a look at and I bought a book called New Arrivals form the Humanist Society with some example wordings. I have also been in touch with someone from Australia who is a celebrant and writes scripts (they are big on naming days in Oz) who has kindly shared scripts and poems with me. I have also trawled the internet for example scripts and suitable poems readings.

I can send you a copy of all the info I have if you like. Some stuff is just weblinks and other things are hard copies.

PM me if you would like a copy im more than happy to send you the info I have :D

We're just going to have our own "Welcome Tilly" party. My fiance will say a few words, then its a case of photos, food and drink and celebrating our little girl with friends and family.

I had a naming day for Oliver, we hired out a function hall, I wrote the script (taking ideas from a ceremony book) and my mum delivered it. I was going to pay a someone from the humanist society to do it but it was obviously much cheaper to just write my own and it was actually nice that it was read by someone so close to us. Then we just had a buffet and music and people sat around and chatted - it was lovely :)

Aw I mentioned the idea to MiL this afternoon and she was really pleased. She offered to hold it at her house if we want which will be really nice as it's more central for the family and has much more room.

We're going to leave the planning till the start of the summer, but I'm so glad she likes the idea. Plus FiL enjoys giving speeches and entertaining. The family really have been good to us so it will be nice to give something back.

Thanks for all the feedback and stories xxxxx
